Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
The Springfield Rifle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tonight you're mine, completely
You give your soul so sweetly
Tonight the light of love is in your eyes
But will you love me tomorrow

Is this a lasting treasure
Or just a moment's pleasure
Can I believe the magic in your sighs
And will you still love me tomorrow

Tonight with words unspoken
You say that I'm the only one
But will my heart be broken
When the night meets the morning sun

I'd like to know if your love
Is a love I can be sure of
So tell me now and I won't ask again
Will you still love me tomorrow

Will you still love me tomorrow
Will you still love me tomorrow

Overall Meaning

The Springfield Rifle's song "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" explores the doubts and anxieties of a lover after a night of passion. The singer asks whether the experience is a fleeting moment of pleasure or a lasting emotional investiture. The lover wonders if the physical and emotional intimacy will remain intact once the day breaks, and the light of morning exposes the truth.

The lyrics suggest that the singer is not just concerned with the physical act of love but also seeks reassurance that their partner's love is sincere and genuine. The singer is overwhelmed by the moment, which they describe as having the light of love in their eyes. However, the concerns over the future and the other person's possible change of heart prove overwhelming, as captured by the line, "But will you love me tomorrow".

The lyrics are a powerful reflection on the anxieties that arise from a one-night stand. The singer's vulnerability and need for affirmation are relatable, particularly for anyone who has ever found themselves caught up in a moment of passion without knowing if it will have any lasting impact.

A song so strong anyone can cover it with great success - bravo Carole King!

Thanks for another fascinating post, Anthony. As someone who was music-directing radio at the time of this release, I listen to these tracks that "almost made it" and look for reasons that they didn't. In this case, the excessively heavy downbeat and the bass going up to the treble range on "I won't ask again" may have been reasons it didn't hook an audience. But there's so much admirable here - the lead vocals, background vocals (especially as the second verse kicks in) and a lot of the arrangement, for starters. And then there's the Gold Star sound.... Thank you for all your very interesting posts. Even if they don't become favorites, they're certainly worth noting and hearing. Keep up the good work!

I have their album still. Purchased new in 1968. A treasure.

Very good version, but for me Bunny Sigler's (also from '67) is definitive

Hmmm....did Bob Crewe, Bob Gaudio and Charlie Calello hear this, and decide the Four Seasons could "top" this version?
