East Virginia Blues
The Stanley Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was born in East Virginia
North Carolina I did go
There I courted a fair young maiden
But her age I did not know

Oh her hair was dark and curly
And her cheeks were rosy red
On her breast she wore a lilly
Where I longed to lay my head

Molly dear, go ask your mother
If you my bride might ever be
If she says no, come back and tell me
And I'll run away with thee

No I'll not go ask my mother
Where she lies on her bed of rest
In her hand she holds a dagger
To kill the man that I love best

The ocean's deep and I can't wade it
And I have no wings to fly
I'll just get some blue-eyed boatman
For to row me o'er the tide

I'll go back to East Virginia
North Carolina ain't my home
I'll go back to East Virginia
Leave old North Carolina alone

I don't want your green back dollar
I don't want your watch and chain
All I want is you my darling
Say you'll take me back again

For you know I'd like to see you
At my door you're welcome in

At my gate I'll always greet you
For you're the girl I tried to win

Overall Meaning

In the song "East Virginia Blues" by The Stanley Brothers, the singer speaks about his experiences in East Virginia and North Carolina. He explains that he was born in East Virginia, but later migrated to North Carolina where he met a young woman whom he liked. As he courted her, he realized that he did not know her age, but he was attracted to her dark, curly hair and rosy cheeks. He hoped to lay his head on her breast where she wears a lily. The singer then asks the girl to go to her mother to determine if she could be his bride. However, the girl warns him that her mother would not approve and was even willing to kill him since she had a dagger in her hand.

The singer realizes that he must leave town and that he cannot stay in North Carolina because it was not his home. He longs to return to East Virginia, but he has no means to cross the ocean. However, he hopes that a boatman with blue eyes will row him to the other side. He then tells the girl that he really only wants her and nothing else, as he invites her to come to his doorstep, where he will always greet her with a warm welcome.

Every time I hear this version of Carter and Ralph, it takes me to the scenery of old Virginia.

Gene The Machine

Had no idea that Carter ever took a break! He shoulda played a few more solos in his stuff, pretty damn good Maybelle imitation to me!

Peter Feldmann

The original, and seminal recording of this song was made by another Virginia group, the Carter Family, in the late 1920s.  The Stanleys do a fine job on it here, with even a rare guitar solo by Carter (close to Maybelle's original take).  Some of the verses link it to another traditional song, "Silver Dagger", but the song eventually returns to the Carter Family's version with the identical concluding verse.

RebelliousRedneckVlogs

@Greg Daughtry this is carter doing lead with his finger and thumb picking. On the album version Shuffler did the lead guitar. However shuffler wasnt the father of crosspicking on guitar as Bill Napier did it first with a flatpick though the crosspick guitar pattern goes as far back as the late 1940s with earl scruggs.
