Close The Door
The Stargazers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Close the door, they're comin' through the window
Close the door, they're runnin' up the stairs
Close the door, They're hangin' off the ceiling
Those (Bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah) are everywhere

He was watering the flowers by the window sill
And then he saw them comin' over yonder hill
Why, there must have been a million of every shape and size
And so I yelled to everyone, "You'd better get inside"

Close the door, they're comin' through the window
Close the door, they're runnin' up the stairs
Close the door, They're hangin' off the ceiling
Those (Bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah) are everywhere

He ran into the playroom, grabbed a cricket bat
And every time he met one, he gave him this and that
That's how it drove me crazy and had me mystified
The more and more I knocked 'em down, the more they multiplied

Close the door, they're comin' through the window
Close the door, they're runnin' up the stairs
Close the door, They're hangin' off the ceiling
Those (Bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah) are everywhere

They got into the kitchen, they got into the sink
They went into the cellar and poured themselves a drink
They got on the piano, ran up and down the keys
And soon I was a-standin' in 'em right up to me knees

Close the door, they're comin' through the window
Close the door, they're runnin' up the stairs
Close the door, They're hangin' off the ceiling
Those (Bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah) are everywhere

Now that all the fuss is over, I sink into my chair
This house is all a shambles, but really I don't care
I'm going to take it easy, try not to think of them
(Bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah) Here they come again!

Close the door, they're comin' through the window
Close the door, they're runnin' up the stairs
Close the door, They're hangin' off the ceiling
Those (Bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah) are everywhere

Close the door, close the door

Those (Bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah) are everywhere
(Bah-dah)

Overall Meaning

The song 'Close the Door' by The Stargazers tells the story of an invasion of some sort of "creatures" that are attacking and taking over a house. As the lyrics reveal, the creatures are coming through the window, running up the stairs, and hanging off the ceiling. The singer of the story is mystified and is not quite sure how to handle the situation. He tries to fight them off with a cricket bat but it only seems to make things worse as the more he knocks them down, the more they multiply. The creatures even go as far as getting into the kitchen, sink, and piano, causing chaos and destruction wherever they go. The song ends with the singer accepting that the creatures are everywhere and there is nothing much he can do but close the door.

The lyrics of 'Close the Door' can be interpreted in many ways, but one possible interpretation is that the song is about the invasion of technology or consumerism in our lives. The "creatures" could represent technology or consumerist products that take over our lives and homes, leaving us mystified as we try to handle the situation. The constant multiplication of the creatures could represent the constant desire for more technology and products in our lives, which often leads to a sense of overwhelm and chaos.

I still have this 78 record bought by my parents. I played it to my children in the 1990's. One day I was replacing a window and a breeze was blowing through, my daughter walked past and I said 'Oi close the door', without shutting the door she said, "They're coming in the window".....
