This Girl Taught Me A Dance
The Strange Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well this girl taught me a dance called the "I don’t care"
she said to me, "it’s easy, I swear"
"stand alone over there, and watch everyone else around you care."
although I know any eyes I make or smile that she may see
I’ll never in return receive
as long as she’s with him and not me

Ahh that girl taught me a lousy dance
I can’t say that it helped me
my heart done hurt from all that work
I think I’ll draw a waterfall bath
and hold my breath
just as long as I can see how close I can get to death
without leaving I know there’s somewhere else that we go
so if I ever come to, or if I ever go forth
let me know if you ever see my ghost

I’m a ghost on a Saturday night
doing the things I never did in life
no use for money or food
I only want to dance with you
but I ain’t dead yet
so I guess I can have this dance
and you can hold my hand

and if I ever come to, or if I ever go forth
let me know if you ever see my ghost

Overall Meaning

In The Strange Boys' song, "This Girl Taught Me A Dance," the singer tells the story of a girl who teaches him a dance called the "I don't care" dance. The girl explains to him that the key to the dance is to stand alone and watch everyone else around him care. The singer is hopeful that he and the girl may have a chance together, but it seems that she is already with someone else. As a result, the dance only leads to heartbreak and hurt for the singer.

Despite this, the song takes a turn towards the end where the singer becomes a ghost on a Saturday night. He wants to dance with the girl who taught him the "I don't care" dance, but he knows he cannot as he has passed on. Instead, he longs to experience the dance in the afterlife, hoping that he may one day reunite with the girl who taught him the dance.

The lyrics of the song are a reflection of the confusion and pain that often accompany unrequited love. The "I don't care" dance represents a desperate attempt to move on from a heartbreak that the singer cannot escape. The desire for a second chance with the girl he loves is so intense that it continues even after his death.

i was in a pretty good band about a decade ago with a bunch of other guys- all in our mid-30s. We did exclusively our own original music until our guitarist stumbled on Boys and Girls Club. He shared and we were hooked. For the next year or so, all we really did with our rehearsal/ studio time was learn and cover most of this record. lol. here we were, a bunch of grown ass men meeting once a week to play songs by some kids in Texas just because it made us happy to do so. Dang, i love these songs.
