Someday
The Strokes栀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In many ways, still miss the good old days
Someday
Someday

Yeah, it hurts to say but I want you to stay
Sometimes
Sometimes
When we was young, oh man did we have fun
Always
Always

Promises they break before they're made
Sometimes
Sometimes

My ex says I'm lacking in depth
I will do my best
You say you wanna stay by my side
Darling your head's not right

I say alone we stand, together we fall apart
Yeah, I think I'll be alright
I'm working so I won't have to try so hard
Tables, they turn sometimes

Oh, someday
Now I ain't wasting no more time

Trying, trying

And now my fears, they come to me in threes
So I
Sometimes
They fade, my friend, you say the strangest things
I find

Sometimes
Oh my ex says I'm lacking in depth
Still I will try my best
You say you wanna stay by my side
Darling your head's not right

I say alone we stand together we fall apart
Yeah, I think I'll be alright
I'm working so I won't have to try so hard
Tables, they turn sometimes

Oh someday
I ain't wasting no more time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Strokes' song "Someday" are characterized by longing for the past, disappointment and hopelessness, amidst a rapid and changing world. The chorus repeats "someday" several times, conveying a sense of hope and an expectation that somewhere along the line, things will eventually get better. The first few lines of the first verse describe the good old days and how much was enjoyed during that period. However, this disappears as the verse proceeds, with the lyrics stating that promises are usually broken before they're made, suggesting the end of the good old days.

In the second verse, the lyrics focus on the singer's desire to have someone stay with them, even though it hurts. The singer admits that they don't have depth, but they will try their best, while also questioning their partner's state of mind. The bridge suggests that the singer doesn't want to waste any more time and is okay being alone, with the lyrics, "I'm working so I won't have to try so hard, tables, they turn sometimes," conveying the message that the singer is finally okay being alone and will not go out of their way to maintain relationships that don't work.

God I LOVE the scene where the Emperor warns Chun that she better not have had anything to do with the horse incident. I think a good majority of the conversations he had with anyone he already knew the answers of the questions he asked. The only person who stumped him with Yinglou. Meaning he already suspected consort Chun and was giving her a very real warning to back off his Yinglou.
