The band, whose "core" lineup featured Tommy Stupid on drums and vocals, Wolfie Retard on bass and vocals, and Marty Tuff on guitar, recorded and released a demo tape in 1984 that they called "Leave Your Ears Behind." The band was picked up by UK label Children of the Revolution, who put out the Violent Nun EP (consisting of tracks from the demo) and the Peruvian Vacation LP in 1985. While preparing for their next LP, the band lost Wolfie on bass and acquired Ed Shred (who would later move to guitar). Retard Picnic came out in 1986, whereby The Stupids were signed by Vinyl Solutions.
Stupids The next two years saw The Stupids play shows around Europe and tour the United States and Australia. Their lineup was less stable, though, but always included Tommy Stupid on drums and vocals. The Stupids released several records on Vinyl Solutions, culminating with 1987's Jesus Meets The Stupids LP. The band was big those days, appearing on the covers of NME and SOUNDS and recording two sessions for John Peel (compiled on a 12").
The Stupids reformed in 2008 following the reissue of the entire back catalogue by Boss Tuneage records for whom they recorded possibly their best release to date 'The Kids Don't Like It"
They continue to play live in the UK & Europe and have recently returned from a tour of Japan. A limited edition 7" EP "Japanese Vacation" was released to coincide with the tour by Waterslide records, Boss tuneage's sister label in Japan.

You make me weep in my own seat
Everything feels just so concrete
Everything feels just so concrete
I don't know you, but I hate you
You make me weep in my own seat
Everything feels just so concrete
I wish I didn't know you
Cause I know you hate me too
I wish I was who you wanted me to be
I guess I shouldn't have fallen for you so easily
I don't know you, but I hate you
You make me weep in my own seat
Everything feels just so concrete
Everything feels just so concrete
I wish I didn't know you
Cause I know you hate me too
I wish I was who you wanted me to be
I guess I shouldn't have fallen for you so easily
The first thing that stands out about The Stupids' song "You Never Know" is the repetition of the opening lines "I don't know you, but I hate you / You make me weep in my own seat / Everything feels just so concrete." The use of repetition here emphasizes the strong emotions of the singer, who is clearly struggling with feelings of frustration and disappointment towards someone they do not even know. The use of the phrase "everything feels just so concrete" creates a sense of stuckness, as if the singer is unable to move past these negative feelings.
The second verse shifts slightly, with the singer expressing a wish that they had not fallen for this person so easily. This adds a layer of vulnerability to the song, as we see that the singer is not just angry but also hurting. The final repetition of the chorus adds to this sense of emotional pain, with the line "I wish I was who you wanted me to be" indicating a desire to be accepted and loved by this person despite the current animosity.
Overall, "You Never Know" is a powerful song about the complexities of human relationships and the difficulty of letting go of negative emotions. The repetition of certain phrases creates a sense of emotional intensity, while the vulnerability of the second verse adds depth to the song.
