… Read Full Bio ↴The Suitcase Junket is American one-man band Matt Lorenz from Vermont.
Located in Amherst, MA, Lorenz is a Maker of Many Things, including but not limited to music, wine, and public art. The Suitcase Junket is the name of this Rusty Belle member’s side project. Featuring a suitcase bass drum with washboard underfoot, a hi-hat and an old gas can rigged up to a foot pedal and a beat-up junker guitar saved from the trash, Lorenz’s instruments are the product of crafty, heartfelt salvaging. This is fitting for music that expresses the emotion of one who has been repeatedly tossed and saved. This past January saw the release of his first album, “Sever and Lift,” which he recorded in Greenfield.

but I got a feeling that my Jackie is lying
because she's done it before
she's done it before
Just the other day
talk about walking on the water
Jackie says I've gotta learn the left right left
because she's done it before
she's done it before
Just the other day
talking about walking on the water
People running around
setting fire to the grass
Jackie said they all go to far in the place
because she's done it before
done it before
Just the other day
talking about walking on the water
Everybody's running down the same old tube
We're losing our wonder and we're losing our youth
because we've done it before
done it before
Just the other day
talking about walking on the water
You're praying for a miracle
you're praying for time
but it's the same old magical gift on the line
because we've done it before
done it before
Just the other day
talking about walking on the water
Just the other day
talking about walking on the water
Just the other day
The Suitcase Junket's song "Jackie" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of relying on false hope and lies. Jackie, a character in the song, reassures the singer that "everything's gonna be fine," but the singer doesn't believe her. He has a feeling that she is lying, and he knows this because she has done it before. The song is filled with ominous warnings about the consequences of ignoring reality and continuing to believe in things that are not true.
The lyrics of "Jackie" also touch on themes of personal growth and change. The singer has learned how to fight, but Jackie tells him that he needs to learn a new skill: the left right left. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the need to constantly adapt and evolve in order to survive in a rapidly changing world. The song also criticizes conformity and groupthink, suggesting that everyone is "running down the same old tube" and losing their sense of wonder and youth as a result.
Overall, "Jackie" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that encourages listeners to question what they believe and to be wary of false promises and easy solutions. It's a reminder to stay grounded in reality and to constantly work on improving oneself, rather than relying on others to save us.
