For anyone wondering what battle the footage is representing in this video, the footage is representing the Battle of the Crater. Which, as a matter of fact, was a horrible defeat for Union troops during the Siege of Petersburg with 3,798 casualties for the North, and (approximately) around 1500 Confederate troops killed with the Union achieving barely anything. The reason for this amount of Union troops being lost is due to them having a long mine shaft being filled with 8,000 pounds of gunpowder. When the day came, (July 30, 1864) the gunpowder was set off making a 30 foot deep crater that is still visible today. After the explosion, Union soldiers (inexperienced I should add) charged the fort but ended up getting stuck in they're own crater. As one Confederate soldier called it a "turkey shoot". They fired into the crater with their muskets and artillery and ended up killing many of the Union soldiers.

it was a failure because Burnside delayed the actual assualt on the Secesh. Also, they went in the Crater instead of around it. Otherwise, It showed the modern side of the civil war, which can be increasingly be seen from Gettysburg onwards - which was a battle itself that saw lots of advanced weapons that would be fully widespread later being used - blasting huge mines and using several dozen Gatling guns when the confederates counterassualted at Petersburg, which this battle was part of.

If you want to understand the war from the perspective of the people, read the songs. For the Union, When Johnny Comes Marching Home and especially the Battle Hymn of the Republic. The Union soldiers truly did view their mission as a holy one. The song ends with "As HE died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, his truth goes marching on." On the opposite side, it was not about a principle, it was about nationalism. The pride one feels in one's home state. And that did make sense because the state was much more important in the daily lives of the individuals in that era. Washington DC was about all the states, but it was far away and things done there did not have much noticeable effect down on the farm.

Well thing about that is that the Constitution did allow for slavery at the time. The Founding Fathers, unfortunately, were not unified on the issue. Many wanted to remove it and it would have been nice if they got their way, but a compromise with those who didn't want to remove it had to be made, with the hope that it would keep the newly formed nation united. If only they could see the future...

Anyway. That said, at the time it would have been a perfectly viable position for a nationalist to hold. The constitution did indeed give them those rights, however at the expense of the rights of others. Which is why it was such a disputed issue, with both positions having legitimacy to them. The south had it clear in legal papers, while the north had the moral ground and both could make halfway convincing economic arguments about the situation. The issues that tear nations apart are ones where all sides have some form of legitimacy, and none will compromise on any of it.

I am a Pole, and this song reminds me of my great-grandfather, a non-commissioned officer of the Polish Army, although he lived and fought in a different time than the song describes, because in World War II in 1939 in Poland, but after the liberation of the German POW camps in 1945, he joined the American Army and he was even supposed to go to the Japanese front, but he returned to his homeland in 1946, and this song fits me perfectly with his return from the war after 7 long years ..

This is the infamous Battle of the Crater that took place outside Petersburg, Virginia in 1864. Originally, a Union African-American (Ferrero's Division) was supposed to lead the charge into the Confederate defenses. They had been trained to go around the Crater and clear the trenches on the other side. However during discussions, General George Meade had brought up concerns to General Ulysses S. Grant that sending this division first might be misconstrued by the press (and politicians) that the Union did not care about African-American lives. Grant agreed and so the commanders of the other 3 white divisions drew straws on who would lead the attack. General James Ledlie ended up drawing the short straw. His division had not been told to go around the crater and unprepared for the attack. After waiting for 10 minutes after the signal for attack, they charged straight into the crater. Chaos and confusion erupted among the officers as General James Ledlie could not be found anywhere to lead the division. The whole division mingled in and around the crater, blocking the divisions behind them from advancing into Confederate defenses. Nearly, 4000 Union soldiers were killed, wounded or captured. The Confederates lost less than 1,500.
General Ledlie was later found in a trench shelter, drunk with bottles of liquor
