Lover
The Supremes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How gentle is the rain
That falls softly on the meadow?
Birds high up in the trees
Serenade the flowers with their melodies

Oh-oh, see, there beyond the hill
The bright colors of the rainbow
Some magic from above
Made this day for us, just to fall in love

Now, I belong to you
From this day until forever
Just love me tenderly
And I'll give to you every part of me

Oh-oh, don't ever make me cry
Through long, lonely nights without love
Be always true to me
Keep this day in your heart eternally

Someday we shall return
To this place upon the meadow
We'll walk out in the rain
Hear the birds above singing once again

Oh-oh, you'll hold me in your arms
And say once again you love me
And if your love is true
Everything will be just as wonderful

Oh-oh, you'll hold me in your arms
And say once again you love me
And if your love is true
Everything will be just as wonderful

Just hold me in your arms
And say once again you love me
And if your love is true
Everything will be just as wonderful

You'll hold me in your arms
And say once again you love me

Overall Meaning

The Supremes' song "A Lover's Concerto" is a beautiful tribute to the gentle, soothing powers of nature, and the deep and abiding love shared between two people. The lyrics evoke a vivid and peaceful landscape, citing the gentle rain that falls on the meadow and the birds that sing in the trees, setting the scene for an idyllic time spent falling in love. The rainbow serves as a symbol of the magic and wonder that seems to fill the air on this special day.

The song then shifts to the present, with the singer declaring her love for her partner, promising to love them tenderly and give them every part of herself. The lines "Don't ever make me cry, through long, lonely nights without love, be always true to me, keep this day in your heart eternally" both speak to the vulnerability and fragility of love, but also to the depth of emotion that the singer feels for their partner.

The song concludes with a call back to the meadow and the memory of this special day, promising the eventual return to this place of wonder and rain. The closing stanza repeats the earlier declarations of love with even greater fervor, promising the happiness and wonder that can be shared when two people are truly in love.

Overall, the song expresses the joy and wonder of two people falling deeply in love. The natural world serves as a kind of backdrop for this scene, highlighting the beauty of love in all its forms. I need love, love
Oh, ease my mind
And I need to find time
Someone to call mine
My mama said, "you can't hurry love
No, you'll just have to wait"
She said, "love don't come easy
But it's a game of give and take"
You can't hurry love
No, you'll just have to wait
Just trust in a good time
No matter how long it takes
How many heartaches must I stand
Before I find the love to let me live again
Right now the only thing that keeps me hanging on
When I feel my strength, ooh, it's almost gone
I remember mama said, "you can't hurry love
No, you'll just have to wait"
She said, "love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take"
How long must I wait
How much more must I take
Before loneliness
Will cause my heart, heart to break
No, I can't bear to live my life alone
I grow impatient for a love to call my own
But when I feel that i, I can't go on
Well these precious words keep me hanging on
I remember mama said, "you can't hurry love
No, you'll just have to wait"
She said, "love don't come easy
But it's a game of give and take"
You can't hurry love
No, you'll just have to wait
Just trust in a good time
No matter how long it takes
Now wait
Now love, love don't come easy
But I keep on waiting
Anticipating for that soft voice
To talk to me at night
For some tender arms
Hold me tight
I keep waiting
Ooh, till that day
But it ain't easy (love don't come easy)
No, you know it ain't easy
My mama said you can't hurry love
No, you'll just have to wait
She said "love don't come easy
But it's a game of give and take"
You can't hurry love
No, you'll just have to wait
She said "love don't come easy
But it's a game of give and take"
You can't hurry love, no you'll just have to wait

You can't hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take

You got to trust, give it time

Before I find a love to let me live again?
Right now the only thing that keeps me hangin' on
When I feel my strength, yeah, is almost gone

I just found out Mary Wilson passed away today. In 1996, I used to volunteer at a youth center called Sunset Junction. The director of the youth center was Michael McKinley, who was the organizer of the Sunset Junction Street Fair and he is a HUGE fan of the supremes. That year (1996) he booked Mary Wilson to be one of the headliners where she performed hits like โ€œyou canโ€™t hurry loveโ€ and โ€œstop in the name of loveโ€ at the Edgecliff stage. After she performed, Michael had arranged a big dinner for her at El Conquistador restaurant (now el condor). I had worked at the tickets booths that day and was invited to the dinner. I happened to sit directly across Mary Wilson and I was amazed by her beauty. She was super nice and told us some stories about her journey into music and some of the places it took her. She then opened up about the loss of her son in a car accident on their way back from a Las Vegas performance two years prior. Then she continued to charm the dozen of us at the table with her beautiful smile and stories. Suddenly she looked at me and we made eye contact for what seemed to be an entire minute although Iโ€™m sure it was only 3 seconds. She smiled and said to me โ€œyou know, you are really handsome!โ€. I smiled and blushed hard. When it was over she gave me a nice hug and I told her it was an honor meeting her. โ€œThank you sweetie, it was a pleasureโ€, she said. And a pleasure it was indeed. Iโ€™ll never forget that moment of my life. Rest In Peace Mary Wilson, I hope sheโ€™s now reunited with her son Rafael.

My mom told us that this is such a wonderful song from her era. In mid 60s she was a sweet 16, and that she'd that time, regularly ask for 20 cents from my late grandpa and head out to nearby cafe's jukebox to air the song. At 70+ today, she still loves Diana Ross' songs and is still keeping it inside her Apple IP.
