Founded in Detroit, Michigan, United States in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes. Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in the mid-1960s with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes in 1967, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left the group for a solo career in 1970, and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of the Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.
Nothing but Heartaches

He brings nothing but heartaches
Woo, I can't break away from his arms (I can't break away)
I can't break away from his charms (I can't break away)
I can't break away from his kiss (I can't break away)
'Cause his kiss I surely miss
All my life I needed someone to need me
So I do my very best to please him
The more of him other girls share
When I need a hand to hold
That's the time he leaves me all alone
Just keeps me, keeps me cryin' myself to sleep
Nothing but heartaches, woo, nothing but heartaches
But I can't break away
Oh, no, keep a loving him more each day
Woo, I can't break away from his arms
I can't break away from his charms
I can't break away from his kiss
'Cause his kiss I shouldn't miss
To him I'm loyal, to him I'm true
Why can't he be the same way, too?
But the more my love has grown, the less love he has shown
He makes promises he doesn't keep
Sometimes I don't see him all week
Just keeps me, keeps me cryin' myself to sleep
Nothing but heartaches, woo, nothing but heartaches
But I can't break away, oh, no, keep a loving him more each day
Woo, I can't break away from his arms (I can't break away)
I can't break away from his charms (I can't break away)
I can't break away from his kiss (I can't break away)
'Cause his kiss I surely miss (I can't break away)
Nothing but heartaches, woo, woo, woo
Nothin' but heartaches
I can't break away, oh, no
The Supremes' song "Nothing But Heartaches" is a tale of a woman who is trapped in a cycle of heartbreak and disappointment in her relationship. The song highlights her struggle to let go of her lover, who brings nothing but sorrow and pain. The lyrics convey feelings of sadness, loneliness, and emptiness, with the singer trying to break away from her lover's charms and his hold on her.
The song features a repetitive beat, almost like a march, that adds to the feeling of being trapped and unable to escape. The use of the word "woo" throughout the song gives the sense that the singer is exasperated and resigned to her fate. The chorus, which repeats the phrase "nothing but heartaches," emphasizes the singer's desolation and heartbreak, which seems to be endless.
Overall, the song's lyrics paint a bleak picture of love, with the singer's love being unrequited and ultimately leading to her getting hurt over and over again. It speaks to the universal experience of loving someone who doesn't love you back, no matter how much you may want to break free from the cycle of pain they bring.

That angel that we hear in the background is Florence Ballard. A talent gone too soon.
@SaxonC
Poor Florence had a rough life. Died young.. If she only knew how many old and new fans love her and how so many pick her as their favorite Supreme! RIP
@Michael-kt1tt
Like Mary Wells
@LoveTheKay
She knew. Everyone would ask her for autographs. More than Mary and Diane
@Will-qs3ql
I know she passed away young and that's tragic and I know her life wasn't the best but jeez there's people in this world with way worse lives then being in a hit singing group
@LoveTheKay
@Will you need to check yourself. She was assaulted
@Will-qs3ql
@Kryilic I know she was assaulted and that's a terrible thing that no one should have to go through. I'm just saying that there's plenty of women who were assaulted who make a living waiting on tables, working in factory's, supermarket checkers etc.
@minnoahbrown
Florence Ballard is KILLING that background, "...I can't break away... I can't break away!..." My gosh, Flo poured out her soul on here!
