The Syn reunited in 2004 based around lead singer/songwriter Steve Nardelli and guitarist Peter Banks. Banks left the band, but bassist Chris Squire rejoined. Their first full studio album, Syndestructible (Umbrello) was released in 2005. Squire left the band in 2006. He currently plays with Yes.
Steve Nardelli put together a new core lineup for 2008-9 that featured Francis Dunnery (x-It Bites), and Tom Brislin (Spiraling; stood in for Rick Wakeman on Yes Symphonic tour/dvd). This line-up released Big Sky (Umbrello Records) in April 2009, although a US tour was canceled after 6 dates.
Dunnery and Brislin left The Syn shortly after the US tour was cancelled.

The Promise
The Syn Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I am not a man to follow
Your heart demands too much
For it to beat beneath my shadow
So foolishly I've fallen
Just a raindrop in this storm
My heart demands so much
It wants to beat but it is torn
And the dreams of summers past
The fantasies of who we'd be
And all the names we cast into the sea
What did you find
How did we all fall so far behind
But I don't mind
They say we'll meet again some other time
Poisoned with promise
We're trying not to need
A reason to let go
Hopelessly hollow
We're trying not to breathe
For reasons I don't know
What did you find
How did we all fall so far behind
No, I don't mind
It seems I'm always running out of time
And it's fine falling
Till the ground returns
Faster than we left it
Chasing concrete solace
Poisoned with promise
We're trying not to need
A reason to let go
Hopelessly hollow
We're trying not to breathe
For reasons I don't know
I don't know
What did you find
How did we all fall so far behind
But I don't mind
They say we'll meet again some other time
In "The Promise" by The Syn, the lyrics delve into themes of disappointment and the complexities of relationships. The opening lines convey a sense of regret and remorse, as the singer apologizes for not communicating their reluctance to conform to societal norms and expectations. They acknowledge that they are not someone to be followed blindly, and that their heart desires more than what can be found in the shadow of another person.
The next lines reflect upon a sense of foolishness and vulnerability, comparing the singer's feelings to a raindrop caught in a storm. Their heart longs for more, but it feels torn between the coldness of a never-ending winter and the warmth of past dreams and possibilities. They reflect on the fantasies they shared, and the names and memories they cast into the sea of their relationship.
The chorus highlights the conflicting emotions and internal struggles within the relationship. The promise of a better future seems tainted and poisonous, as they try to resist the need for closure and letting go. The emptiness inside them is palpable, as they struggle to find reasons for their actions and decisions.
The second verse resumes questioning and searching for understanding. They wonder how they ended up so far behind, feeling detached and out of sync with the world around them. Yet, despite the turmoil, there is a sense of acceptance and resignation. They express that they don't mind the circumstances, as they believe that they will eventually meet again in a different time or place.
The bridge of the song conveys a sense of falling, as if they are constantly descending without being able to regain the heights from where they started. The ground returns faster than they anticipate, and they find themselves chasing solace within the concrete jungle of their lives.
Overall, "The Promise" explores the challenges of relationships, the pain of unfulfilled promises, and the complexities of navigating one's own desires and expectations within them.
