The group consisted of sisters Betty and Rosie Collins, sisters of Aaron Collins, a singer with the doo wop group The Cadets. It was Aaron who wrote their debut song, and the single that became their biggest hit. "Eddie My Love" was released by RPM Records, and following its success, was followed by a string of other releases. These included "Baby Mine", "Billy Boy", "Red Top", "Rock Everybody" and "I Miss You". But none of these achieved the success of their debut song.
Consequently, the group left RPM in 1958 and signed a one record recording contract with RCA Records, who released "Dear Tommy". This also failed to make much of an impact on the charts. There then followed a later contract with Antler Records and a further two singles, "There Is Nothing on Your Mind" (an answer to "There's Something on Your Mind") and "I Heard Violins". Again, however, these songs enjoyed little success and by 1961, the group decided to call it a day.
"Eddie My Love" was also recorded by The Chordettes and The Fontane Sisters, both of which also made the charts in 1956.
Somebody to Love
The Teen Queens Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Each morning I get up I die a little
Can barely stand on my feet
Take a look in the mirror and cry
Lord what you're doing to me
I have spent all my years in believing you
But I just can't get no relief
Lord
Can anybody find me somebody to love?
I work hard every day of my life
I work till I ache my bones
At the end I take home my hard earned pay all on my own
I get down on my knees
And I start to pray
Till the tears run down from my eyes
Lord, somebody, somebody
Can anybody find me, somebody to love?
(He works hard)
Everyday, I try and I try and I try
But everybody wants to put me down
They say I'm goin' crazy
They say I got a lot of water in my brain
Got no common sense
I got nobody left to believe
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Oh Lord
Somebody, somebody
Can anybody find me somebody to love?
Got no feel, I got no rhythm
I just keep losing my beat
I'm O.K., I'm alright
Ain't gonna face no defeat
I just gotta get out of this prison cell
Someday I'm gonna be free, Lord!
Find me somebody to love
Can anybody find me somebody to love?
The lyrics to The Teen Queens' song "Somebody to Love" express a deep longing for love and companionship. The opening lines of the song set the tone for the singer's search for love. They wake up each morning feeling like they are dying a little without someone to love. Even looking in the mirror leads to tears of frustration and loneliness.
The singer then speaks of working hard for their whole life, and yet feeling like they have no relief. They pray for someone to love until they cry, highlighting the desperation of the situation. The song's message becomes even more potent when the singer speaks of others putting them down and calling them crazy. The lack of a companion begins to take a severe toll on their psyche and their desire to find somebody to love becomes all the more urgent.
Finally, even the rhythm is off in the singer's life as they speak of "losing their beat." However, they still proclaim that they will not be defeated and strive to be free of the prison of loneliness. Overall, the lyrics of "Somebody to Love" convey a sense of longing, desperation, and the human need to be seen and loved.
