Scary stories won't stop me from hiking alone in extremely remote places. Mostly not in national parks, but I've been in crazy places and situations alone in those also. Even looking for the remains of someone who disappeared mysteriously in a national park, though likely via either foul play (my opinion) or just an accident (official investigators' presumption).

As for bigfoot, etc, I do have two (totally independent) friends of friends who claim to have seen what they believe to have been that, one more clearly than the other. But it's UFOs that I'm totally convinced of the reality of being something extraordinary. Fairly close sightings by several people I know and trust completely. Plus 55 years of reading and personal investigations tending to confirm some things I read and tended to believe.

Once you believe in one extremely incredible thing or incident being true, it's hard to automatically disbelieve people who feel the same way about other extremely incredible things or incidents. And we know little enough about the exact reality of each odd phenomenon, that I find it hard to rule out that some, most, or all might be linked. Things are not all as they seem, but we already knew that from quantum physics.

Still, that's not enough reason to believe vague claims by people not willing to go on the record with their name and everything they know, to allow scrutiny and fact checking. Like this alleged ranger quoted here, 2nd-hand, 3rd-hand, 4th-hand, or whatever.

I don't mind tempting fate a bit to see what I want to see and do what I want to do. We all die soon enough anyway. The odds were that I'd be dead several times over by now. It's all gravy now, all icing on the cake. For family reasons, I exercise some caution. But I'm not going to be paralyzed with fear, into living life on a couch. That can be fatal, also.

We were camping in upstate NY. My husband went to the lake to get water and I fell asleep in the tent. At 2am I woke up and he still wasn’t back. He is an experienced hiker and I knew something was wrong.
I drove down the mountain to get reception on my phone and got once it still didn’t work. I found a pay phone by some miracle and called 911.
He was lucky but something really messed up happened. He was 8 miles in when they found him. He had hypothermia and his feet were mangled from hiking barefoot. We never found his shoes. His shirt was ripped almost in half and he had no water. It took 100 volunteers to find him and the the park rangers said they didn’t understand how he got so far in because he had to have crossed over a road to get there. My husband has no memory of crossing a road. He has no idea where his shoes were, how his shirt ripped, why he had no water when he went to get water. Nothing. Again this is a serious hiker and we are both backwoods campers who’ve hiked all over the world.
15 years later he still has no memory of crossing a road while lost. He has no idea how he got lost. He doesn’t know where his phone went or his gps.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter how experienced you are. You can get turned around in the dark easily. Never hike alone, period. Don’t get water alone if you’re not in sight of your partner. Anything can happen. I thank God that those wonderful volunteers showed up for us.

I was hiking in Los Angeles National Forest by myself as I usually do; I use to take this 6mile hike into the forest. The trail gets more thin and trees cover the sun. The trail goes up to a small mountain. A man came out from behind a bush and threatened to end my life if I didn’t give him my wallet and phone. I didn’t have a weapon; when I tried to run away he tackled me to the floor and stabbed my thigh. He got me by the neck like he was gonna stab me but then stepped away. I threw my phone and wallet far behind him so I can run again. I got away from him but I was lost. Luckily I stayed near the small river cause I knew if I followed it i’d get back to the main trail. I literally walked on the river only about a foot deep for 2 miles to avoid him. Something random like that can happen to anyone. That situation scared me so much I didn’t hike for a year. There was a moment I really thought it was over for me. Take pepper spray or a weapon and don’t let anyone without a backpack or water bottle near you. Homeless people who are up to no good live in the mountains.

I used to live in Jasper National Park and I swear some weird things go on there.
The week I moved into the town, Jasper, there was a missing persons poster from a guy who once of my buddies knew.
All this guy did was leave one house to go home and he completely vanished and still hasn't been found.
I saw things there that I have no scientific explanation for and I was totally creeped out at one point.
They're all long stories but the point of my comment is just to basically say that I agree: something weird is happening.

Well since some of you are interested I'm actually talking of two separate stories both of which are multi layered.
The short versions:
I saw several inanimate objects, move on their own and one switch itself on... twice. There are a few parts to that story and at one point I actually felt petrified because I didn't know what was gonna happen. I have pictures of the rooms where this all happened but sadly no videos. The only consolation I have is that three other people were present when some of this went down.
The part where I was creeped out was just as scary but in a completely different way because I'm almost certain I saw a murderer and, unfortunately, his victim.
I've told these stories to a few people and some share my unease while others just brush them off like: "Cool story, bro'", and I'm left with the sense that they don't believe me. Which is fine because these stories always begin with: "I don't expect you to believe me. I only hope that you believe that I believe it".

I knew a guy this happened too. I'm glad I wasn't able to go on that trip. He literally vanished into thin air. I was told he was seen walking through the camp and told a mutual friend he was going to the "pee" tree and then they could all start the hike. The tree was pretty much in clear view of camp, only some tall grass making it private, besides they were all guys anyhow. No more than a few minutes later friends called out to him to start the planned day hike. He was gone. I'm told everyone instantly spread out in all directions and should have been able to find him very quickly but not a trace could be found. He is missing and presumed dead to this very day. It breaks my heart while it scares me to death to think about what the hell could have happened too him. I mean I knew this guy since childhood, it never made any sense to me.

When my daughter was 8 we often went for day hikes that were five to ten miles. Nothing out of the ordinary. I met a prospector in the Yukon Territory in the 1970’s who was rafting down the Liard River and fell asleep. His raft got sucked into a big whirlpool on the lower end of an island and he lost everything including his boots. He walked out over one hundred miles through the bush barefoot. What is happening in our national/state parks I think goes far beyond our assumptions.
Stating what is probably already known, but maybe not by all. The national parks are areas regulated by a specific department within our governments interior. There are many blacked out areas from satalite images and even more closed off restricted areas such as tunnels, caves, etc... THEY do not want people venturing into these places for a reason. And it is not for your own well being.
In the U.S., before these lands were stolen by the acts of a thieving, greedy, murderous bunch. The natives lived here and in their sagas spoke about how they came from under the ground in caves. How they fought giants. How there are civilizatuons below us to this day.
Thru archeology, we find there have been many civilizations prior to ours which called earth home. If you go in the American Midwest, you will find Indian burial mounds which are burial sites for the giants they killed. Do some research and you will find news articles and documentation showing these skeletons being as large as 26ft. The Indians hunted them to extinction, but honorably gave them elaborate burials as a great adversary.
In the grand canyon, there are many caves/tunnels with artifacts from ancient Egypt, India, etc... I have detailed maps and elevations for their locations.
Not sure if the parks hold any special government site locations, but there is something definately in there that they do not want the world to know.
We travel alot and like to pick locations out that most would normally overlook. This past weekend, we went to Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve in South Florida. In order to get there, you need to take the alligator alley highway to a road and drive 11 miles south right into the everglades. Nothing around but then you come up to a couple of roads where there are trailers and cars that just do not look right. We go 2 miles in and you come to the welcome sign. Nobody around. We enter the road, which is a non paved, very holey and bumpy narrow one lane road that goes on for 7 miles. The swamp trees and all vegetation is nearly overtaking the road. As we got deep into it, we noticed there was a small shack in the middle of the woods with chains and locks on the chains. Going deeper, there were signs which said cam trails and other photography equipment is prohibited. We locked and loaded our guns by this point. We get to a point where you need to turn and go another 3 miles in. There are no other roads turn around spots and no cell phone signals. The place really gave you that hills have eyes feeling. We turned around and headed back out. Never saw any animals, other cars the whole time. It was dead. When we got out of the park and to the cross roads, we saw a black backpack, a subway drink sitting on its side with pop coming out and a sub thrown on the ground which was not there when we entered the park. As if someone just was kidnapped. Human trafficking is huge globally. For torture, sex slaves, etc... Usually, for parks if something is going on, the rangers who are in charge there are in on it. My wife later that night went online and read the reviews which were not many. But everyone said the place gives them a very eerie feeling. I am hesitant to call into the head of the state's park service to file a request for someone to check then place out. But again, if something is going on there who knows how high up it goes.
I Love to explore, but the way the world, governments and people are these days, it's really not worth it...

I have no idea what chased my niece except what she told us. She lived by a canyon. Her big dogs went up ahead of her into the canyon. When she was about 3/4 down she smelled something not normal to the area. Then she saw something that scared the heck out of her and took off running back up. It chased her for awhile. She said it had eyes that looked red. She swears it was half human and half something hairy. She had nightmares everytime she went to sleep that she stay awake as long as she could. They landed moving out of the house to a town with no canyons.

My question is, what about the huge numbers of people who are going for a walk on a flat path not an “advanced trail”. That woman who was walking a path followed by an elderly couple and she vanished around a bend. There was no cliff, no dense trees or vegetation, nothing but flat ground. The three year old found weeks later on top of a vertical cliff face hundreds of miles from where he went missing, and his body showed signs that he had died within 24 hours? He had been missing for weeks! No one knows what’s going on and it’s okay to say “heck, we don’t know, but remember these national parks are not your backyard. If you wander off the beaten path you can run into Vets with ptsd, gypsies, cartels, serial killers, hippie enclaves, hermits and felons on the run. @@klstadt I've been to these parks. Deep in them alone for weeks at a time and the only close calls I've had have been with fellow humans. No bigfoot, aliens, or ghosts.
Think about it like this. Slave masters in the south had trained bloodhounds and hired expert trackers, still slaves escaped and made it across several state lines to the north. If they had left signs of human habitation and tracks it would have been easy to catch them. The same goes for forest dwellers today. If it was so easy to even find these signs with modern technology why do the cartels regularly use them? It's not because they like losing money.

I know when i got lost . it was so quick I was 11. As soon as I entered the trees it all looked the same. I dont know why I didnt cry out our camp area was an open area with other campers in that area. I was so scared I walked faster & faster. Beleiving that I could turn & find my way back. When I reached an opening where the store is. I was way off. So I turned around again to go in the opposite direction I made it back. Off base but I saw our camper so I was so releived. A person trying to do it theirself,a child not wanting to get in trouble. Not thinking I could've yelled. I couldve asked for help @ the store. But I didnt want to make a fuss & get in trouble. Agreed. Good point. There are lots of instances of people being found miles from where they were last seen, but I'm not aware of anyone being found at a distance far enough to defy the laws of physics. It might be difficult for a child to walk 10 or 12 miles in a day but it's not impossible. It's not like anyone has ever disappeared and been found the following day in New Zealand. Use Occam's razor and stick to the most logical explanation.

Search and rescue teams, experienced hikers, police and others search for these people for years and no evidence is ever found of them. My brother-in-law was in charge of massive firefighting operations for the forest service. One of his guys was about 20 ft away when he disappeared into thin Air. He popped up a few hours later in a rest area bathroom over a thousand miles away with no memory of what happened. Very interesting. It’s not just an American thing though. As I understand it, there are folk tales from all over the world about forests and the deep dark woods. "Devils Den State Park, Arkansas" 5 years ago a hiker was reported missing after his friend had hiked 1¹/² miles back to the car for a heart medication that his friend was needing, upon his return his 240 pound friend with a heart condition had disappeared, 120 professional and volunteer search and rescue personnel with dogs searched for 4 days and found only a cell phone. 2 years later a random hiker finds a skull and some more human remains just off the trail. Only reason I followed the story is due to this being a park that I frequented with my family. I remember thinking that there is no way with the topography that in an hour a hiker could just disappear. About 13 miles wide, Devils den is a relatively steep valley with Lee Creek that runs through the center, there are very high bluffs that someone could fall from or maybe a deep creves that someone may fall in, but to find the man's remains just off the trail, makes this a very creepy place to hike or camp. I will never see the wilderness with the same innocence.

I live in Malaysia where we have thick jungle and a lot of myths related to jungle spirits. I know seasoned hikers who have had experiences they can’t explain. One of them went off to pee one evening and was overtaken by a smell that he said he just had to follow. He kept walking deep into the forest until he had a sudden ‘what am I doing’ thought and he said in that moment, the smell turned putrid and all these flies started swarming him. Thankfully he managed to find his way back to camp. It took him 6 hours to get back. The army folks also have a lot of stories. My friend was a cadet and was once on a training hike with his squad. For some reason they couldn’t find their way out of the jungle despite their captain having done the same exercise hundreds of times. So his captain made everyone empty their bags in front of him. Turns out this other cadet had picked up a piece of twisty root fused to a rock coz he thought it was cool. The captain got really angry, made him discard it, and they found their way out soon after that.

Also, lots of stories about sounds, screeches, the sensation of something large flying through the canopy. The advise: if you feel it, never look up. Keep walking and pray! It is also customary to apologise and ask permission from the jungle spirits every time you do a bush pee. Something I have followed since I was a kid. Another common unexplained phenomena - lights whizzing by in the jungle. Many have seen them in collective sightings.

I was hiking in Big Bend national park, specifically Marufo Vega, just before Thanksgiving 2020. It still gets into the 90s on a cloudless day. I wasted all of my water 3/4 of the way, but somehow managed to gut it out. Around 2 miles to go, and at the hottest part of the day, I noticed a man (white, 40s) was walking toward me. It was bizarre because normally hikers wear at least a pack of water here, or a hat to cover themselves. He was dressed like he was taking a walk to his mailbox. I said hello as we passed, to which he didn't respond. He wasn't walking normal, it was almost like he was in a trance. Very creepy stuff. Normally I would've stopped to investigate if he was ok, but I was out of water and unarmed. It was also 3pm and only a few hours of light remained and there was no way I was going to risk helping when I wasn't in any condition to help.

@Davis Edison no, you need to read some of David Paulides’ “Missing 411” books and you’ll know what we’re talking about. There are some stories of missing children that just defy any real explanation and I’m a complete skeptic when it comes to paranormal stuff.

I don’t believe in the supernatural or paranormal claims at all, yet, I still have no explanation for some of these missing persons; provided the evidence and stories are true to how he has reported them. If so, they have no real world explanation. At least by any science we presently understand. If true, there must be portals in the forests or some other scientific anomalies we don’t yet understand?

David was a police officer for many years before retiring and investigating these missing persons in National Parks. Some are so strange that they’ve never really been solved. In cases where the children were found, everyone is happy and just move on, even though the way the child disappeared and was returned make no sense at all.

One of those most interesting stories I heard from Missing 411 was where these two guys were hiking/climbing. One was at the top of a incline hooked to the dude at the bottom. I was at a camp where we stayed out in the woods. Coming back they left me last and I got lost briefly. Saw a meadow I recognized and followed it back to camp. I was 14.

These explanations do not address many details in these disappearances i.e. where are the bodies, shoes, backpacks, dogs failure to follow scents, handicapped individuals that cant walk farther than a few yards never seen again, children found ridiculous distances fron point of separation, bodies show up in places that have been searched repeatedly, feet w/o marks even though found far away over horrendous terrain etc.etc etc etc. Theres even a case on my shasta were a man disappeared while attached to a fellow climbers tether. The line went limp. Peaple at the bottom didnt see the man fall. He has never been found. A rescuer told Dave Paulidis the only place for the man to go wat up or into the mountain because he was nowhere on the mountain. No, this attempt to minimize this phenomena is a feeble one.

One thing I have always said: Places don't become haunted just because one tragic event happened there, they become haunted from Multiple Deaths/Tragic Events occurring there, if there is one easy example on this earth of a place that is easily riddled with death and decay, it is forests.

I had gotten lost in a forest once as a child after attempting to follow a group of kids into it towards something they found "cool". I wasn't in there but a few minutes before things got weird and I had no clue were I was, and being the stupid kid I was, I didn't think of heading back the way I came, so I continued onward, wandering further and further, after what seemed like a few minutes of being lost I had navigated back to the campsite by following a creek I found along the way by following the opposite direction the water moved in once I had remembered there was a lake next to it, everyone began freaking out, thinking I had gone missing, apparently I had been gone for a couple hours, and everyone began searching for me and calling my name, yet I heard nothing, I was scolded something fierce by my Dad and taken out of the Boy Scouts after that.

Forests are definitely weird places, and definitely not something I would recommend going into without someone to accompany you and a clear path back.

4 minutes of something strange is going on in the woods. Ultimately it's super easy to get lost in a forest. I lost my sense of direction out in the snow. Maybe 500 feet from parking lot. Super easy to get lost and go missing. And most times people are not carrying essential survival kits.

These chimerical beings are real, they are here, my friend and I both saw one together in the middle of the woods of the pacific north west of the USA on the night of july 4th, 2008.

We where walking down a path to shoot off fireworks, and in our way there was this pale white figure on the ground, looked like a nude, thin man with his hips facing the other way just laying in the dirt path, it was so pale that It was almost glowing despite it being pitch darkness, skin narled in places, baby smooth in others..its eyes shaped as ours, but there was no life behind them, just big and black menacing ocululi, the color of oil. at first I thought my eyes where playing tricks on me but my friend saw it to, as I turn away it quickly crawls towards me and grabs my ankle.. I rip my foot away and ran a fast I could jumping over fallen trees and ripped up by the branches as I follow my friend who is a few feet ahead, not once daring to look back.

That's why I pack like I'm going to be lost for a week even if it's a weekend trip. I hike, backpack, and camp all the time. Things can get strange but you always bring protection if you know what I mean. Also pay attention to your surroundings such as other people, wildlife, and the people your with because they might see something you dont. It's just suggestions, be safe out there

I was in the woods one night solo by an abandoned 1800s railway house. It was dark and I heard crashing through the woods to the point of big branches being broken and then heard whistling, like someone looking for their dog. Only problem was that it sounded way too big to be a dog and way too late to be out walking one.

I don't believe that. Before I became a Christian, I worked w demons many years and NEVER saw one use a porthole, or use any other 'dimension' than the one we are in. I believe it is a Bermuda Triangle type phenomenon. People disappear, "lose time", and are discovered a long distance from where they got lost. In the Triangle, airplanes go through some sort of electronic fog and emerge at a point so far away from their original coordinates that it just doesn't make sense.
So, perhaps there are mini worm holes on this earth and when people accidentally enter them, they end up far away with memory loss.

It’s very easy to get lost very quickly. I did my undergrad in UC Santa Cruz and one day two friends and I were walking on a road. We knew there was an abandoned truck next to a river in a small ravine next to this road. We could see it a little through a bunch of trees and bushes. We were crossing the street when one of my friends started running saying she would get their first and she disappeared across the street and over the side. By the time my other friend and I crossed the street and looked down she was gone. We tried to follow the path we thought she took and called out to her several times. We got to the abandoned truck, waited, called for her some more. Finally went back up to the road and waited. Finally we decided to go back to the dorms thinking she had done the same thing. She had and once we were all together and went over what happened we decided that all three of us had to have been extremely close to each other and couldn’t understand how we separated like that. I told her we had been screaming for her. She said she never heard us. She said she had also been screaming for us. Trees do strange things to sound.

I've never been any of these national parks but had my share of hikes in my side of the world. On one hike, going back from the summit. I started seeing gnomes which I refer to as images rather than creatures as those didn't move around. Well maybe not while I was looking. I just chucked it into fatigue and high altitude. Meanwhile, my grandparents house was up on hills near forests. My aunts and uncles claim they've seen ghosts and other entities. I've been there too, never saw any but have experienced eerie events such as hearing people talking just outside the house only to find nobody and weirdest was hearing a horse and knocking on the door at close to midnight. Again only to find nothing.

Once when I was 8 years old my parents went back to Ohio to visit relatives. At the back of one person's back yard began a forest. Having grown up in Los Angeles I never saw a forest before and was fascinated. Since I really didn't know anyone in Ohio, I began walking through that forest. After a couple hours it opened up into someone else's backyard. Then I realized that's not where I belonged. So I turned around and walked back to the house I started from. In total I was gone 4 to 5 hours. When I got back to the house, at that time I could not understand why everyone was so upset. At 8 years old I was fortunate to make it back to the house I started at as I had no preparation, no experience and had no idea where I was except somewhere in Ohio with my parents, visiting someone in Ohio I did not know.

It is easy to get lost even in a small forest... It is often hard to recognize you are in real trouble and a few minutes of walking the wrong way can easily take you out of earshot. What you think is an easily recognizable landmark might look completely different from the other side. I don't care how experienced you are, people do weird things when they are scared. Too much confidence can also be a problem as you are more likely to delay seeking assistance.

I got lost in a thick swamp once deer hunting in Wisconsin. Was with a friend and I told him I’m leaving the keys in the gas tank. It was overcast so no sun. Luckily it was halfway warm, but unfortunately my ball compass was on my thick jacket. This was the day before smartphones. Years later looking on Google maps, it was about 4 miles (in a straight line) to where I finally found a cabin. Another 2 miles to my friends place down the road. It wasn’t all thick swamp, but the part that was, you start to hear and see things. And it was a damp overcast and completely calm quiet day.

When I was in my 20's, I walked into a cave entrance in Big Bear, Ca one time and came out of a different opening in the earth in the mountains in San Diego County. I had to hike a few miles after to get help. I had to have a family member come and get me from the Los Angeles area, and take me back to my pickup in Big Bear. I hadn't been in that cave more than about 45 minutes. This was all in real time.

Just pure stupidity and complacency of human being. I've been all over this national parks for few years now. One thing I know is never put myself in a spot where I don't have plan B through Z. Weird people roam the night to take advantage of the weaker individual... And if you end up on your plan Z then be ready for the fight of your life... Your fate will depend on your survival skills... Just about anything can happen to you out in the woods in the middle of nowhere. It doesn't seem to matter if you're experienced with the outdoors,or even if your'e in a group of people. Besides the obvious strangeness going on with these vanishings, I do feel that some of them are also the result of criminal activity.What better place to abduct people for human trafficking purposes,or illegal organ harvesting? There's also a high amount of homicides that go on in these places. There's really no way of watching what's going on in the entire park ,every minute of the day.Since these places are all about making money, the people who run them are not going to say anything they might know about what's happening. It could decrease the amount of revenue they are taking in on a yearly basis.We only know about cases that are reported and discussed. Who knows how many more happen that we will never know about.

I can barely sit through these types of videos (like the Missing 411 stories) without thinking that something much larger, much darker, is at play here. Like the 3 1/2 year old that vanished near Mt Shasta, only to be found hour later. He told his grandparents that a robotic looking “person” scooped him up, took him to a cave where he saw other people who didn’t move, and then once the robot that stole him couldn’t get any fecal matter from him, through him out into a bush where he was later found. Now why would a 3 year old make that up?

What that park ranger said is correct. Temperature can make or break your survival and make you do very strange things. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for someone with heat stroke or hypothermia to not respond to calls and often walk off in an unknown direction unannounced. As for a kid walking 13 miles with only 600 feet of elevation gain, that's not even a rare event for it to occur in a single day. Kids have boundless energy and will often beat their parents uphill. Barefoot or not.

a friend of mine went to this park outside of Austin Texas period. followed trail and got lost and by the time he realized he had walked over five miles and 10 to be exact luckily he found his way out to a road. so it's very easy to get lost was experienced hiker

The forest ranger who came forward to clarify most misunderstanding on the disappearance of people spoke well , give just enough information to make us believe his explanations. He I believe, just beat the same bush everyone has beat on. He said nothing only that we're all over reacting to thousands of disappearances basically. He is not allowed to give any credible information out ! That's the policy all nation parks staunchly stand by and enforce their laws. Federal government run the national parks..

Sure! Literally thousands of people have all disappeared in the U.S. National Parks system because they were unskilled beginners -- so unskilled, in fact, that they immediately disappeared without a trace and managed to elude hundreds of search and rescue team members and their dogs, along with infra-red detection and helicopters. That's really accomplishing something for all those "beginners."

30 miles in 6 days through ruff terrain for a healthy adult or energetic child isnt that crazy...some people can do 50 miles in 8- 12 hours..she only had to hike 5 miles a day although she probably did way more than that moving in circles lost...When I was 4 i followed a dog 5 miles in a few hours..the whole town was looking for me...I was found at a home on the front steps asleep with the dog..lol..she must have ran into a water source somewhere

I could understand that inexperienced hikers go astray, but how about the experienced ones?? Yes, there could be weirdos stalking people. I believe I some of the cases , it could be something otherworldly at play. Be aware of your surroundings , ALWAYS.

I lost the trail once hunting I had to use compass to get back to camp. It's real easy to get lost out there if you don't know what your doing.
