Overtime
The Tiger Lillies Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As they’re marching through the square
As they’re running for the Tube train
That could take them anywhere
Do you think and imagine
Where exactly that is
Will they kiss
Well I dream of overtime
Rush hour trains that will be mine
I dream of overtime and
Rush hour trains and parking fines
We stand line by line
Everybody’s feeling fine
Tickets in our hands
So many dreams and plans
We dream nine to five
It’s better than a Soho dive
It’s better than anything anything
We dream of overtime and
Rush hour trains that will be mine
We dream of overtime and
Rush hour trains and parking fines
And I dream of overtime and
Rush hour trains and parking fines
I dream of overtime and
Rush hour trains and parking fines
Rush hour trains and parking fines
The Tiger Lillies' song "Overtime" is a melancholic ode to the repetitive, mundane, and unfulfilling nature of modern life. The lyrics describe people going about their daily routines, dreaming of escaping to a more exciting and meaningful existence. The first verse paints a bleak picture of the ordinary life, with people marching and running like automatons, their destinations unknown. The second verse reveals the singer's daydreams of working overtime, riding the crowded rush hour trains, and getting parking fines. These seemingly banal activities have become symbols of excitement and adventure for a person stuck in the drudgery of a nine-to-five job.
The chorus repeats the phrase "We dream of overtime and rush hour trains and parking fines," emphasizing the monotony of daily life and the desire for something more. The image of the crowded train, in particular, represents the sense of feeling trapped and unable to break free from the routine. The final verse reinforces the theme of longing for a better life. The dream of working overtime, something most people hate, becomes a beacon of hope for the singer, a chance to escape the tedium of daily life.
Overall, "Overtime" is a poignant commentary on the alienation and dissatisfaction that can result from a life chained to a job and routine. The repetition in the lyrics and music underscore the monotony of the day-to-day existence, while the wistful tone suggests a yearning for something more meaningful.
