Weekend In L.A.
The Toasters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I want to go to Rio
Spend a week in Paris, France
Slide off down to Haiti
And do some limbo dance
But I'm doing time in the city
I just don't understand
I should be lying on some beach
Writing love letters in the sand

Weekend in LA
Weekend in LA
Weekend in LA

So I dreamed a Greek vacation
And a holidy in Red Square
I ran straight to Soweto
As they could pull out all my
A camel ride in Egypt
A trek across the sand
I could be lying on some freak
And do some limbo dance

Weekend in LA (x4)

So I thought about a ticked
For a game of cricket
From a place called Pakistan
And Sheik Ali would give me the key
To crib on his divan
We'd me up with the Mexicans
And sign it over booze
And Ruby says
"This ain't no Port Au Prince"
Have you heard the news?

Weekend in LA (x4)

So what's up with Tanzania
Or may be Tenerife
I've got to catch a breather
Before I kick out someone's teeth
And you say you'll check me later
But I don't see quite how
How will you check me later
If you don't need me no more?

Overall Meaning

In "Weekend in L.A." by The Toasters, the lyrics describe the singer's desire to travel to various destinations around the world, including Rio, Paris, Haiti, Soweto, Egypt, and Pakistan. The singer is stuck in the city and the monotony of regular life, dreaming of exotic vacations and adventures. The repeated line "Weekend in L.A." serves as a reminder of the singer's current location and inability to travel.

While the song is about traveling and experiencing new things, it also touches on themes of boredom and feeling trapped. The singer is unhappy with their present circumstances and dreams of escaping to new places. The mention of potentially violent situations ("Before I kick out someone's teeth") adds a layer of tension to the song, contributing to the overall feeling of restlessness and frustration.

Overall, "Weekend in L.A." is a catchy and upbeat song that manages to convey a sense of yearning and discontent through its lyrics. It's a reminder that even though travel can be exciting and fulfilling, it's often born out of a desire to escape the mundane.

I can't decide which version is better. The original has way better vocals but pretty much everything else is better in this version. I also miss the "Arriba".
