Outside
The Tribe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Greg)
Through the windshield, on the footbridge
They cling to each other at the close of day
They've not a care for the crush of traffic
Their captive audience, they say
Look we've each other
What more could we ask for
We're right where we want to be
We're right where we want to be
And my heart skips and I twist a little
And the light's green and I drive away
I think who knows
What it is what it might be
I know anything goes
I've been there don't remind me
All kinds of twisted thoughts
Swirling through her head
She's already wondering about the baby
And look at him, watch his eyes
Who knows could be
He's already gone for the weekend in his mind
So here I am All on my own
Looking around Sun is shining
In all directions And now I feel

The wave inside And now I feel
The wave inside I'll hide my smile

Overall Meaning

In the song "Outside" by The Tribe, the singer is expressing their observations of a couple embracing each other on a footbridge at the end of the day, seemingly oblivious to the heavy traffic around them. The couple appears content in each other's company, with their surroundings becoming less significant than their shared time together. The singer admires their connection, feeling a slight pang in their own heart as they depart. The singer muses on the unknown possibilities of the people's relationship, knowing that anything is possible in matters of the heart. Meanwhile, the woman in the couple is thinking about potentially having a baby, while the man seems mentally checked out, preparing for a weekend getaway. The song ends with the singer feeling the rising tide of emotion from within but choosing to hide their smile.

In this song, The Tribe explores the theme of love and human connection in a bustling city. The heavy traffic and busy surroundings serve as a background to the couple's embrace, highlighting the power of their bond. The song also touches on the uncertainties that come with relationships, such as the possibility of children and partners drifting apart. The hidden emotions of the singer add an element of mystery to the song, questioning whether they are rejoicing or lamenting the sight they have witnessed.

This is, hands down, the best, most unknown, greatest song ever, in the history of music.

I completely agree. I heard them on the radio in Boston (and saw them a few times). I actually did not like this song at first but now it gives me chills listening to it. "He's already gone for the weekend in his mind"...
My favorite Tribe song ever. On my personal Top 10 of all song ever.

You said it all, stranger from past long years on the internet.

Not completely unknown thanks to Rock Band.
For me personally, that title belongs to Dance Of The Manatee by Fair To Midland.Super underappreciated band....

I never tire of this song. Imagine a recent college grad from Oklahoma, on his own, starting his first job in Boston, grabbing lunch in Kendall Square in Cambridge, and hearing a live band a few blocks away. Was a beautiful spring day, warm, blue sky with a few puffy white clouds. Was introduced to Tribe that day. Heard a few great songs late in the set before they broke before the encore. I was right up front and stage right. Suddenly the curtains in front of me opened a little, and I was face to face with Janet. She smiled right at me, checked the crowd, and disappeared all in about two seconds. Then they came out and finished with Outside. I fell in love with Janet, Tribe, Boston, and my freedom all in that one lunch break. And I instantly feel the same way to this day every time I treat myself to this song.
