Originated from a surf rock group called the Crossfires, the Turtles delved into many genres such as breezy pop, psychedelic music, and folk rock. A precursor to the bubblegum pop of the late 60s and early 70s as well as a foil to the more self-consciously hip and "serious" acts of the era, the Turtles produced at least a dozen memorable, radio-friendly chart singles. Yet they remain best known for 1967's "Happy Together", which was their only chart-topping single.
The Turtles wound down their career in 1970.
The two prominent singers - Howard Kaylan ("Eddie") and Mark Volman ("Flo" a.k.a. "Phlorescent Leech") - collaborated with Frank Zappa for a short but very intensive period of one and a half years (between 1970-72) and were the cornerstone of what was known to be the Zappa "Vaudeville" band; two of the most famous achievements of that period being the albums Fillmore East – June 1971 and 200 Motels, the soundtrack of the film by the same name.

The Turtles Lyrics

Lets go for a ride
Grap some beer and some drinks
It is saturday night
Listen to the music
Moc Turtle style!
You are my sugar baby
I am your lasergun-rifle
Hey! Hey! Hey! Oh yeah!
At saturday night
Everything is allright! Allright? Allright!
Moc Turtle style!
Saturday night
At saturday night he is always at home
And watches some porn or a stupid TV show
But Moc Turtle knocks your door
Take our hands and fly
We need booze, party, bitches!
It is saturday night!
Hey! Hey! Hey! Oh yeah!
At saturday night
Everything is allright! Allright? Allright!
Moc Turtle style!
Saturday night
Everybody is in the house!
Even you are welcome!
If you are a hot mama plug that bass, kick that bassdrum!
We want party, we want drinks!
That is what we like!
Come on everybody: It is saturday night!
Hey! Hey! Hey! Oh yeah!
At saturday night
Everything is allright! Allright? Allright!
Moc Turtle style!
Saturday night
The lyrics to The Turtles' song "The Night" depict a lively and fun Saturday night filled with music, drinking, and a carefree attitude. The singer invites someone to join them for a ride, to have some beer and drinks, and enjoy the night. The mention of "Moc Turtle style" suggests a unique and playful approach to their activities.
The lyrics also touch upon the idea of companionship and affection, with the line "You are my sugar baby, I am your lasergun-rifle." This could be interpreted as the singer expressing their love and admiration for their partner, using playful and imaginative language.
In the second verse, the lyrics reveal that on a typical Saturday night, the person the singer is addressing tends to stay at home watching pornography or mindless TV shows. However, the singer wants to break free from that mundane routine and have a wild night out. "Moc Turtle" represents a fun and adventurous alter ego who shakes things up and brings excitement to the night.
The chorus emphasizes the celebratory atmosphere of Saturday night. The repetition of "Hey! Hey! Hey! Oh yeah!" creates a sense of enthusiasm and anticipation for the festivities to come. The lyrics also highlight the inclusivity of the party, with the line "Everybody is in the house! Even you are welcome!" emphasizing the open and welcoming nature of the gathering.
Overall, the lyrics depict a desire for a lively and enjoyable Saturday night, filled with music, partying, and good company. "Moc Turtle style" represents a unique and fun approach to embracing the night and making the most out of the weekend.
