Originated from a surf rock group called the Crossfires, the Turtles delved into many genres such as breezy pop, psychedelic music, and folk rock. A precursor to the bubblegum pop of the late 60s and early 70s as well as a foil to the more self-consciously hip and "serious" acts of the era, the Turtles produced at least a dozen memorable, radio-friendly chart singles. Yet they remain best known for 1967's "Happy Together", which was their only chart-topping single.
The Turtles wound down their career in 1970.
The two prominent singers - Howard Kaylan ("Eddie") and Mark Volman ("Flo" a.k.a. "Phlorescent Leech") - collaborated with Frank Zappa for a short but very intensive period of one and a half years (between 1970-72) and were the cornerstone of what was known to be the Zappa "Vaudeville" band; two of the most famous achievements of that period being the albums Fillmore East – June 1971 and 200 Motels, the soundtrack of the film by the same name.

It's been a long time since I've seen you
You've got a lovely place; the kids must send their love
We stood there lonely, baby, without you
CHORUS:
& girl, you don't have to walk in the rain
'Cause baby, I know things can be just the same as before
When you walk through my door, you'll be home
I was so afraid I almost turned away
But you know I need somebody to cling to
I looked at your face; I love you anyway
It's been a long time since I've seen you
(chorus twice, then repeat its 1st line & fade)
The Turtles’ song ‘You Don’t Have to Walk in the Rain’ is a classic love song, with lyrics that describe the feeling of being reunited with someone after a long time apart. The singer looks at the face of the person they love and wonders if it’s still the same face that they fell in love with all those years ago. The song is nostalgic and heartfelt, with a longing for the past and a desire to recapture the love that was once lost.
The lyrics go on to describe how the person being sung to has a lovely place and the kids are sending their love, suggesting that this is a family reunion of sorts. The chorus cuts in at this point, with the singer telling the person that they don’t have to walk in the rain anymore because everything will be the same as before they left. The idea is that when the person walks back through the singer’s door, they’ll be home.
The final verse of the song sees the singer admitting that they were scared to see the person again after so much time had passed, but ultimately they needed somebody to cling to. The chorus is then repeated again, with the first line sung twice and then fading into the end of the song.
