I Became a Prostitute
The Twilight Sad Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a girl in the crowd and she's bawling her eyes out
Only girl in the town with her fingers in eyelids
And we're all fine in the back of your mind if we do what we like
Then we could be with you tonight and if we bleed you dry
And we're alright in the back of our minds if we do what we like
Then we could be with you tonight and if they bleed you dry
Taken half the tide, taken all your tide and if we bleed you dry
Bleed, you dry, we've taken half your tide and if we bleed you dry

You are the bearer of a womb without love, you could have had it all
Is that what you said, is that what you said on a low ride
You said, in your hands you'll stay all with me today
You are the bearer of a womb without love, you could have had it all
Is that what you said, is that what you said on a low ride
You said, in your hands you'll stay all with me today

There's a hand in the till still believing what she sells
Only girl in the town with her fingers in eyelids
And we're all fine in the back of your mind
If we do what you like then we could be with you tonight
And if they bleed you dry, and taken half the tide, and taken all your tide

You are the bearer of a womb without love, you could have had it all
Is that what you said, is that what you said on a low ride
You said, in your hands you'll stay all with me today
You are the bearer of a womb without love, you could have had it all
Is that what you said, is that what you said on a low ride
You said, in your hands you'll stay all with me today

Bleed you dry, I'm taking half your tide and if I bleed you dry

Overall Meaning

"I Became a Prostitute" by The Twilight Sad is a cryptic song that deals with themes of exploitation and sacrifice. The opening lines describe a girl in the crowd who is crying with her fingers in her eyelids. This image conjures up a sense of extreme emotional pain and vulnerability. The line "we're all fine in the back of your mind if we do what we like" suggests that the singer and those around him are selfish and only care about their own desires. The repetition of the phrase "and if we bleed you dry" adds to the sense of exploitation.

The chorus repeats the phrase "you are the bearer of a womb without love, you could have had it all." This striking image suggests a woman who is used for her reproductive potential but not valued as a person. The line "is that what you said on a low ride" adds to the idea of exploitation, as if the woman in question is offering her body in exchange for something she wants. The final verse introduces another character, a woman who still believes in the power of what she sells. Again, the repetition of the line "we could be with you tonight" suggests that the singer and those around him see women as objects to be used for their pleasure.

Overall, "I Became a Prostitute" is a haunting song that portrays a bleak, exploitative world. The lyrics offer little hope, and the repetition of certain phrases adds to the sense of despair. The music adds to the overall feeling of melancholy, with its slow tempo and distorted guitars.
