Needle In A Haystack
The Twilights Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well well, I once believed all fellas were nice
But girls, listen to me, take my advice
Girls, you'd better get yourselves onto my track
'Cause findin' a good man, girls, is like findin' a

(Needle in a haystack)
What did I say, girls?
(Needle in a haystack)
(She-doop, she-doop, la la, he-doop, she-doop, la la)

Girls, those fellas are sly, slick and shy
So don't you ever let 'em get you starry-eyed
Well, you may think their love is true
But they'll walk right over you

Now girls, you should know these things right off the back
'Cause findin' a good man, girls, is like findin' a

(Needle in a haystack)
What did I say, girls?
(Needle in a haystack)
(She-doop, she-doop, la la, he-doop, she-doop, la la)

Now girls, I say I'm tellin' you the natural facts
'Cause findin' a good man, girls, is like findin' a

(Needle in a haystack)
What did I say, girls?
(Needle in a haystack)

I'm tellin' you, girls, you'd better look before you leap
Still water sometimes runs very deep
You'll be sorry when you just jump
And do justice passed by love

Girls, you should know these things right off the back
'Cause findin' a good man, girls, is like findin' a

(Needle in a haystack)
What did I say, girls?
(Needle in a haystack)

I say you'd better take heed
(Needle in a haystack)
Listen to me
(Needle in a haystack)
(She-doop)

You'd better play hard to get
Or you're gonna regret
The day you were born, girl
When he leaves you alone, girl

Good guys are like findin' a
(Needle in a haystack)

Girls, they're like findin' a
(Needle in a haystack)

Overall Meaning

The Twilights' song "Needle in a Haystack" warns young women to be careful when searching for love. The lyrics advise that finding a good man is like finding a needle in a haystack. The singer warns that guys are sneaky and smooth-talking, and they will take advantage of a naive girl's feelings. The song suggests that girls should be cautious in relationships and not fall for false promises of love. The message of the song is clear: finding a good man isn't easy, and women should be careful to avoid heartbreak.

The song "Needle in a Haystack" was originally performed by The Velvelettes in 1964, but The Twilights released their version in 1966. The song is a classic example of the girl-group sound of the 1960s, with a catchy melody and harmonized vocals. It is a tribute to the Motown sound, which was hugely popular at the time. The Twilights' version of the song was a hit in Australia, reaching number two on the national charts. The song has since become a beloved classic of the era.

What is all the nonsense in some of these comments? This era in Australia was total magic. These bands, The Twilights being in the top 5, were such a blessing for young Australians. Thank you guys! Great music and performance!

@deniseward002

They were a hoot. So glad to have lived through those times.

@LouKodge

in 1966 i was a a 17 year old going to IMPACT, a sat night dance at Dandenong Town Hall. ,Every sat night a group would play live music, all the top acts going in aust.at that time. On all occasions us kids would dance to the music, EXCEPT the night when the TWILIGHTS played. Such was their pressence and sheer musicianship that the whole place just stood and listened to their whole set. That had never happened before. They were that good.

@pbritten1

glenn shorrock has always been brilliant no matter which band hes in

@robinwanless3496

Australia should get more credit for the bands They have, alot of underrated, Great Bands come from down under. .

@raykmoon

I was a 17 y.o. drummer in a crap band in the first (1966) Hoadleys Battle of the Sounds, which these guys won. Before the show, I heard them practising their vocals backstage by the boxing ring, and immediately thought "can I go home now?". They were H-O-T (and we were not) ...

@RonWylie-gk5lc

Great little story, puts all of us right there.

@blastoiseddr
