I Know a Soldier
The U.S. Army Airborne & Infantry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was more forgiving in the beginning
You know, you never let the good ones go
Holding onto you like rope
Talking to my memories like they would remember me
Oh, the good ones never get old
The rest of them, I let go

Ooh, when did you stop making sense?
"You're slurring your words again", he said
Strung out on the bed, I can't handle this (handle this, handle this)

Ooh, I've got mixed, mixed emotions
Ooh, I've got mixed, mixed emotions
You're a lightweight, gotta get your head straight
Hellbent on a mistake, mistake
And ooh, I've got mixed, mixed emotions

It's a little bit funny how
It all makes sense in the here and now
Oh, we were just boys back then
Hanging on by a thread
I didn't know how to tell you
What it was I had been going through
Oh, it's better left unsaid
It's been weighing me down since then

Ooh, when did you stop making sense?
"You're slurring your words again", he said
Strung out on the bed, I can't handle this (handle this, handle this)

Ooh, I've got mixed, mixed emotions
Ooh, I've got mixed, mixed emotions

So, tell me, tell me how your night went
Guess you lost your license, did they like your accent?
Ooh, I've got mixed, mixed emotions
Mixed emotions

I'm dancing on a ceiling (the ceiling, the ceiling)
But I just lost all feeling (feeling, feeling)
It's history repeating (repeating, repeating)
I'm not mind reading

I'm dancing on a ceiling (I'm not)
Like I just lost all feeling (I'm not)
It's history repeating, listening (I'm not)

Face me, tell me how I'm complex, you are codependent
Pretend to be affected, life without you isn't sweet
Face me, tell me how I'm complex, you are codependent
Pretend to be affected, life without you isn't sweet, isn't sweet

Ooh, I've got mixed, mixed emotions
Ooh, I've got mixed, mixed emotions
You're a lightweight, gotta get your head straight
Hellbent on a mistake, mistake

And ooh, I've got mixed, mixed emotions
Mixed emotions

Overall Meaning

It is quite difficult to write an insightful interpretation of the lyrics to The U.S. Army Airborne & Infantry's song "I Know a Soldier" as the lyrics aren't coherent or have a clear meaning. It can be inferred that the song is about flexing, killing, and doing things fearlessly without caring about consequences. The lyrics mention illegal activities and violence, indicating life in the military isn't for everyone. The Army can be a brutal and unforgiving place, and this song might be empowering for some while being a nightmare for others.

Overall, the song seems to glorify violence and lawlessness, which can be problematic. It's essential to note that the lyrics of this song do not represent the US Army's values or the soldiers fighting for their country. The work of the soldiers is to protect and serve, and they often make personal sacrifices for the country's welfare. With this in mind, the song's lyrics are not a fair representation of the army's reality.

In 2001 on my 4th jump I had a collision under the plane with someone, his chute was wrapped around me and I knew I was falling faster than previous jumps. Thought I was tangled in my chute…Upon pulling my reserve, I noticed a jumper dangling below me….my reserve chute stole the air from main and collapsed it, so now two of us rode my reserve to the ground at an extremely fast pace.

He smacked the ground and I landed on him breaking his leg in several spots, splitting my chin wide open from his risers smacking me.

I laid there crying for a while lol, second guessing my choices in life. The black hat ran up to me and after assisting the guy with his leg he looked at me and said “damn airborne! you need stitches badly but if you go to hospital you won’t jump your 5th jump and will recycled.”

“Put a bandage on it and let’s get you graduated.” He absolutely motivated me to make that final jump. Back then your 4th and 5th jump were back to back around 4pm and then a night jump around 6pm or 7pm. So I had to immediately turn my chute in and jump again after that malfunction….after that went to hospital but they couldn’t stitch it because I waited to long. I ended up going to back to Bragg after , quickly made jump master after 3 years, and before I knew it I had 138 jumps over my 14 year career. I was never scared of jumping again until the day my son was born….that was my last jump. I was terrified and knew I couldn’t do it anymore.

Graduated yesterday. Class 04-24!

Remember, feet and knees together, bring your personal canteen. They issue out helmets.

Pay close attention to ground week and tower week, as you’ll be learning how to properly plf, jump out of the 34 ft tower and mock bird exits. Also be prepared to run everywhere you freaking go lol.

Get familiar with properly rigging your combat equipment as you’ll be buddy rigging each other. We DID NOT do the 250 foot tower as the instructor mentioned in this video.

Pay attention to everything they have to teach you, embrace the suck, and you’ll make Jump Week look easy!

Yes! Get your BA/BS degree first but don’t go in as an officer. Join as enlisted for minimum amount of years (2-3), then submit your OCS or warrant officer packet while in as enlisted.

The best officers I had were prior enlisted guys. They understood what went through and everyone respected them more. I’m not saying you wouldn’t be respected but just saying you would be admired more going enlisted first.

If you go warrant officer you may enjoy that so much more than as an officer. They are the professionals in their field, Artillery, Medical, Mechanical, Aviation or pilots.

Just curious, why are you picking education? You can be a teacher in most states without a degree in education but the Army doesn’t allow all degree fields to go OCS.

If you have any interest in it at all I recommend Computer Science, Engineering, Aviation, Or even the easiest of all Business Management and put most focus on knocking out as many Microsoft certifications, AI certifications, Linux and CISCO certifications as possible

You would never be jobless and would easily make six figures immediately. Sorry I went off on that lol…I’m sure you’re picking education for a reason
