The Varukers’ song "I Don’t Wanna Be A Victim" is a protest song that expresses a desire to resist societal and national oppression. The lyrics repeat "I don't wanna be a victim" like a mantra, creating a strong sense of determination to break free from the forces that seek to control us. The song’s opening verse, “Don't wanna be a victim of society's oppression,” reveals an aversion to being a passive recipient of societal norms and expectations that limit individual freedoms. Additionally, the lines, “Don't wanna be a victim of a national depression,” suggest a critique of economic and political systems that lead to widespread suffering.
The chorus of the song continues to emphasize the desire to be free from oppression and resistance against those who try to control us. The lyrics, “Don't wanna play the starring role in your sad obsession,” and “Don't wanna play the starring role in your depression,” show reluctance to be used as a scapegoat and a rejection of being part of someone else’s destructive narrative. The song’s call to action is for individuals to reject the oppressive forces that seek to manipulate and control us and to live life on our own terms.
