New Rose
The Vibrators Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is she really going out with him?
I gat a feelin inside of me
Its kinda strange like a stormy sea
I don know why,i dont know why
I guess these things have gotta be
I gotta new rose ,i got her good
Guess I knew that I always would
I cant stop,to mess around
I gotta brand new rose in town
See the sun,see the sun it shines
Dont get too close or itll burn your eyes
Dont you run away that way
You can come back another day
I never thought this could happen to me
I been so strange,so why should it be

I dont deserve...somebody this great
Id better go , or itll be too late, yeah

Overall Meaning

The Vibrators, a British punk band, released "New Rose" in 1977 as their debut single, kicking off a wave of punk-inspired music. The song begins with the question "Is she really going out with him?" which sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics, which are introspective and a little wistful. The singer has a new love interest in his life (the eponymous "new rose") and doesn't quite know how to process his own emotions around this new development. He is introspective and uncertain, likening his feelings to a stormy sea.

Despite his uncertainty, the singer is clearly excited about his new relationship; he has "got her good" and can't stop "messing around" with her. The sun is shining on this newfound love, but the singer urges caution, warning that getting too close could result in being burned. At the end of the song, the singer seems almost surprised that he could be deserving of someone as great as his new rose, and he considers leaving before it's too late.

"New Rose" is a classic punk song that encapsulates the early days of the genre. It's fast-paced and energetic, with shouted lyrics and a catchy guitar riff. However, what sets it apart from other songs of the era are the lyrics, which are more introspective and contemplative than many punk songs. This is perhaps why it struck a chord with audiences everywhere and has endured as a beloved song to this day.
