They appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in October 2002 (the first Australian band to do so since Men at Work in 1983) with the words "Rock is Back: meet the Vines" boldly emblazoned underneath. Referred to as the 'The' bands, The Strokes, The Hives, The White Stripes and The Vines combined "old fashioned punk and adrenaline fuelled riffs" to be ushered in at the beginning of 2002 as the "saviors of rock".
The Vines have been moderately successful in the Australian recording industry, winning an ARIA in 2002 for Breakthrough Artist and receiving nominations for six other awards in as many years. In 2003, their debut album Highly Evolved went double platinum in their home country of Australia, and since then the band has released six albums and a "Best-Of" compilation from their time at Capitol Records.
The band started to record their 5th album in February 2010. The album recording was completely finished in mid March, with mixing taking place in Sydney at the end of March and mastering taking place in early April. The album, "Future Primitve," was released in June 2011.

The Vines Lyrics

In the factory
Heads are down and all the people frown
In the factory
I'm so down I put my head around
Every noose I see
Days are long but the minds are strong
Aaaaahhh hey hey
Aaaaahhh hey hey
Eyes are mean but the walls are clean
In the factory
Patience now they're gonna string you out
In the factory
I'm so tired I never go outside
Every night I sleep
Days are long but the minds are strong
In the factory
Aaaaahhh hey hey
Aaaaahhh hey hey
In the factory
In the factory
Every night I sleep
In the factory
Aaaaahhh hey hey
Aaaaahhh hey hey
The Vines's "Factory" is a tune that explores the dull, life-draining daily routine of factory work. The prominent theme that emerges from the song is the discontent and drudgery that come along with working in a factory. The song starts by stating that even though the days are long, the workers' minds are strong, suggesting that the workers are still striving to do their best despite the long hours and dull work. The lyrics then describe the atmosphere around the workers. Their heads are down, people are frowning and the only thing that keeps them going is the inner strength that comes from within.
The lyrics then start to whine about how the environment around the factory is just as miserable as the workers themselves, with eyes being mean and walls clean. The "patience now they're gonna string you out" line suggests that the management is not giving the workers any leisure or respite, and this can lead to mental exhaustion. The song ends on the same note as it began, with the repeated lines "In the factory" and "Every night I sleep," underlining the never-ending cycle of work and monotonous existence.
Overall, The Vines's "Factory" effectively portrays the bleak reality that exists for those working under difficult conditions in factories.
