In 2006, 12 year-old school friends Ágústsson (guitar and vocals) and Reynisson (drums) formed the band. Serious work only began in 2009 and within two years the band self-published their eponymous first album.
In early 2012, the band signed a deal with Icelandic record label Sena ahead of work for their second album. Alexander Örn Númason joined shortly after on bass. A second album Voyage was released in 2012 initially by Sena. The band signed to Nuclear Blast shortly after the release of Voyage. This led to a Expand Your Mind music video produced and released by the German record label. The short film shows the psychedelic 'trips' the three members experience. As of July 2015, the video reached 400,000 hits on YouTube becoming the most viewed online song by the band. Nuclear Blast re-released Voyage to a much wider audience.[2]
2014 saw the band playing at festivals such as Roadburn Festival, Wacken Open Air and Hard Rock Hell.
In April 2015, the band announced on Facebook that drummer Guðjón Reynisson had left the band for personal reasons however still remained good friends with the remaining band members. In the same post, Stefán Ari was introduced to fans as the new drummer of the band. On the 15th May 2015, Arrival was released with Nuclear Blast as the band's third studio album. This was the first record since the recent line-up change.
Babylon
The Vintage Caravan Lyrics

Where do I journey now?
Caged in, settle my rage
Release, ego subsides
I flew too close to the sun
And falling, I disappear
Driven by filth and disgust
A rush to the head
So full of life, so animated
Down the walls of Babylon
Babylon
A clearing far from here
We are alone in the crowd
Trust me, shines in my eyes
Separated on our own, we both go blind
A rush to the head
So full of life, so animated
Don't try to say there's nothing wrong
In Babylon
A rush to the head
Break down the walls of Babylon
Babylon
Babylon
Babylon
Babylon
I flew too close to the sun
And falling, I disappeared
Driven by filth and disgusts
Overpowers my senses
A rush to the head
So full of life, so animated
Don't try to say there's nothing wrong
In Babylon
A rush to the head
Break down the walls of Babylon
Babylon
The lyrics of The Vintage Caravan's song "Babylon" convey a sense of introspection and conflict within oneself. The opening lines, "Black stripes run down my sides, Where do I journey now?" suggest a feeling of being lost or uncertain about one's path in life. The singer seems to be struggling with inner turmoil, feeling trapped and seeking a way to release their pent-up emotions and ego. This internal battle is further emphasized by the imagery of flying too close to the sun, a reference to the Greek myth of Icarus who fell to his death after flying too close to the sun. The singer's descent and disappearance symbolize a moment of reckoning and realization of their own limitations and flaws.
The mention of being "driven by filth and disgust" highlights a sense of being overwhelmed by negative emotions and impulses that cloud one's judgment. The singer is grappling with these overpowering sensations, which may be leading them towards destructive behaviors or thoughts. The repetition of the phrase "A rush to the head, So full of life, so animated" emphasizes the intensity of these conflicting emotions and the heightened state of being that accompanies them. The walls of Babylon serve as a metaphorical barrier or constraint that the singer feels compelled to break down in order to escape their inner turmoil and confront their reality.
As the lyrics progress, there is a shift towards a sense of isolation and longing for connection. The lines "A clearing far from here, We are alone in the crowd" evoke a feeling of being disconnected from others, despite being surrounded by people. Trust and vulnerability are highlighted as essential elements in forming meaningful relationships, as indicated by the line "Trust me, shines in my eyes." The singer acknowledges the struggle of being separated from others and the blindness that can occur when trying to navigate relationships on one's own.
The repetition of the word "Babylon" throughout the song serves as a powerful refrain, underscoring the central theme of inner conflict and the desire to break free from societal constraints and personal limitations. The singer's journey towards self-discovery and introspection is encapsulated in the repeated refrain "Break down the walls of Babylon," suggesting a defiance against the norm and a quest for personal liberation. Ultimately, the lyrics of "Babylon" invite listeners to reflect on their own inner struggles and the importance of confronting one's fears and limitations in order to find true freedom and authenticity.
