Kutulu!
The Vision Bleak Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Scene VI)

The priest goes into a detailed description of the unholy rite
That did cast the evil spell onto our main character.

A moonless sky, midnight was nigh
No sound did break the still
A strange mystique
Was felt in all
A spirit that seemed
Wrong and ill

Suddenly the cold winds blew
And coyotes howled afar
A mighty thunder shattered the earth
The growl of grand GNAA

Whisp'ring voices could be heard
Utt'ring a foul spell
Men circled 'round a secret stone
And summoned greatest hell

Cold blades did light in darkness
And the high priestess
Started the unholy rite...

IA! IA! KTULU FTHAGHN!
IA! R'LYEH! KTULU FTHAGN!
IA! IA! KTULU FTHAGHN!
IA! R'LYEH! KTULU FTHAGN!
IA! IA! KTULU FTHAGHN!
IA! R'LYEH! KTULU FTHAGN!
IA! IA! KTULU FTHAGHN!
IA! R'LYEH! KTULU FTHAGN!

Blood was shed unto the stone
That raised into the air
And from the ground crept
What seemed snakes,
But God know what was there!

Cold blades did light in darkness
And all the desert
Seemed to join the blasphemy

IA! IA! KTULU FTHAGHN!
IA! R'LYEH! KTULU FTHAGN!
IA! IA! KTULU FTHAGHN!
IA! R'LYEH! KTULU FTHAGN!
IA! IA! KTULU FTHAGHN!
IA! R'LYEH! KTULU FTHAGN!

IA! IA! KTULU FTHAGHN!
IA! R'LYEH! KTULU FTHAGN!

Overall Meaning

"Kutulu!" is a track that takes listeners deep into the dark abyss of Lovecraftian horror. Scene VI starts with the priest describing the point of view of the main character, who is witnessing an unholy rite. It's a moonless night, almost silent, yet there's a strange sense of mystique, something terribly wrong and ill. Suddenly, cold winds blow, and distant coyotes start howling. A mighty thunder shatters the earth, and the growl of the Grand GNAA is heard, echoing in the darkness. The growl is followed by whispering voices, uttering a foul spell, while men circle around a secret stone, summoning the greatest hell.

The high priestess starts an unholy rite, raising cold blades that light up the darkness. Blood is shed onto the stone, and it starts to rise into the air. From the ground, creepy snakes appear, but God knows what they really are. The entire desert seems to be joining the blasphemy. The chorus "IA! IA! Ktulu fhtagn! IA! R'lyeh! Ktulu fhtagn!" is the chant of summoning the Great Old One, Cthulhu, whose mythos is explored in a significant part of Lovecraft's work. The chanting members of the ritual display an unwavering devotion to the uncanny horror beyond our imagination, demonstrating their willingness to invite chaos into their midst.

@Simonize41

They are the best band in the world. I’m happy to say that I’ve been a fan from the very beginning; TVB are magnificent! They should be the biggest band in the world.

@savagedonut

They are one of the best gothic metal bands around, that is new, from 2000 onwards. I like the fact they are not so well known, people get stuck in the mud with Metallica and Pantera or something like that.

@vannyafton
