Regret
The Vitriots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My only regret was
That I never told your family your hell
And my only
Regret was
That I listened to the stories that you'd tell
My only neglect was
Your brain and all your suicides
My only regret was
All the feelings that I always tried to hide

So Let's just
Kill the Romance
So Over
You and Your friends
So Let's just
Kill the Romance
I Came here
Just so I can fucking dance

Oh I just want to fucking dance
Oh I just want to dance
Oh I just want to dance

So let's go home
And fight there
'Cause these people are staring
And they're not quite sure
If we're friends
So why are we still caring
Your fist clenched
My jaws tight
You pull me
For one last fight
Yeah I know you
Yeah I know you
Yeah I know you

So Lets just
Kill the - Romance
So Over
You and Your friends
So Lets just
Kill the Romance
I Came here
Just so I can fucking dance

Oh I just want to fucking dance
Oh I just want to dance
Oh I just want to dance

Oh so let's just
Shut up and dance

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Vitriots' song Regret may seem to be a jumble of different thoughts and emotions, but upon closer examination, the song seems to be about moving on from toxic relationships and situations. The lines "My only regret was that I never told your family your hell" and "My only neglect was your brain and all your suicides" suggest that the singer's previous relationship was with someone who was struggling with mental health issues and that the singer feels guilty for not doing more to help. The line "All the feelings that I always tried to hide" also suggests that the singer may have been keeping some of their emotions and struggles hidden from the person they were with.

However, the chorus, which repeats the line "Let's just kill the romance," seems to suggest that the singer has come to a realization that the relationship was toxic and that it's time to move on. The lines "I came here just so I can fucking dance" and "Oh, I just want to fucking dance" suggest that the singer is ready to let loose and have fun again.

The second half of the song seems to be about finally breaking free from the toxic relationship and not caring about what anyone else thinks. The lines "So why are we still caring/Your fist clenched/My jaws tight/You pull me for one last fight" suggest that there may have been a physical confrontation that the singer is determined to move past. The final line, "Shut up and dance," suggests that the singer is finally ready to let go of the past and have a good time.
