After having moved from California to New York, singer/songwriter Brian Wurschum formed a band called The Voyces. Soon the group released “The Angels of Fun” (2003), a mostly folk-oriented effort co-produced by Diego Garrido (The Simpsons, The Squid and the Whale). That same year, The Voyces would receive international exposure when one of their songs, “Relate To Me,” was included in Jack Johnson’s “Thicker Than Water” film and soundtrack.
In 2006, Wurschum joined forces with singer Jude Kastle, and the pair completely re-formed The Voyces (along with drummer Eric Puente and longtime bassist Frank Carreno). That same year, two of the band's songs found their way into the feature film, "National Lampoon’s Adam & Eve" and the television show, "Monarch Cove."
Since "Kissing Like It's Love" first became available for pre-orders, it remained a bestseller at Barnes & Noble dot com (March 18th: #7 in overall sales; April 2nd: #3 on alternative bestseller list), and was in its second pressing well before its official release.
New album, "Let Me Die In Southern California" is due to be released worldwide on September 28th, 2009.
Relate To Me
The Voyces Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's been so long since I had any fun
I don't know what's wrong
I just wanna play another song
When the seasons change, leaves will still be blowing through my brain
Can you feel your heart ache? Do you relate to me?
'Cause when he holds the light he knows there's nothing that he has to fight
Can you feel your heart ache? Do you relate to me?
The Voyces’s song Relate To Me is about the universal feeling of loneliness and the desire for connection. The lyrics suggest that the singer is feeling bored and disconnected from the world, longing for a deeper connection with others. The line “Oh, the night's so young, it's been so long since I had any fun” speaks to this sense of isolation, as the singer implies that they haven’t had a good time in a while. The following line, “I don't know what's wrong, I just wanna play another song” suggests that music is a source of comfort for the singer and perhaps a way to connect with others who share their love of music.
The next verse presents an interesting contrast - “In an empty home, the man inside it never feels alone, ‘cause when he holds the light he knows there's nothing that he has to fight”. Here, the singer seems to be suggesting that being surrounded by people may not necessarily cure feelings of loneliness. The image of an empty home with an isolated man who finds solace in a light is a powerful one, and perhaps suggests that sometimes it’s the simple things that can bring us comfort and connection.
Overall, the song is a poignant exploration of human connection and loneliness, and it encourages us to “relate to” and empathize with each other.
