One Foundation
The Wailers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got to build our love on one foundation
Got to build our love on one foundation
Got to build our love on one foundation

There will never be, yeah! No love at all
There will never be no love at all

Got to put aside them segregation, yeah!
Got to put aside them organization
Got to put aside them denomination
There will, there will never be no love at all
I mean there will never be no love at all

(Got to build our love) so build our love
(On one foundation) on one foundation
(Got to build our love) come, let us build our love
(On one foundation) on one solid foundation
(Got to build our love) got to build our love
(On one) on one foundation (foundation)
Or there will never be a single drop of love
You won't have no freedom now, yeah!

Got to come together
We are birds of a feather
We got to come together
'Cause we are birds of a feather
Got to come together
Cause we are birds of a feather
Or there will never be (Lord, have mercy!) no love at all
There will never be, yeah, yeah! No love at all

We also got to realize we are one people, yeah!
Got to realize that we are one people, yeah!
We got to realize we are one people
Or there will never be no love at all
There will never, never, never be no love at all

Got to build our love on one foundation
Got to build our love on one foundation
Got to build our love on one foundation

Got to build our love on one foundation
Got to build our love on one foundation

Overall Meaning

In the song One Foundation by The Wailers, the repeated phrase "Got to build our love on one foundation" emphasizes the importance of unifying together in order to establish love. The song speaks to the need to put aside all forms of segregation, organization, and denomination because it is only through unity that love can be fostered. The lyrics assert that without a solid foundation of unity, there will be no love at all.

The second half of the song elaborates on the need to come together as one people. The phrase "birds of a feather" implies that though individuals may appear different, at the core, they are connected and need to unite. The repetition of "we got to come together" emphasizes the urgency of the situation, indicating that without coming together, it will be impossible to establish love.

Overall, One Foundation is a bold call to action, encouraging individuals to recognize their interdependence and to set aside differences in order to establish a foundation of unity that will ultimately cultivate love.

I saw the wailers live about a month ago. It was the greatest concert I have ever been to in my entire life. Words cannot express the joy and happiness I was feeling during that time.

All three wrote great lyrics, its just that Marley was more prolific and more accessible. Tosh was to militant, Bunny too reclusive and very spiritual. Fools Die, The Day The Dollar Die, Equal Rights, are some of Tosh's best songs, Liberation, Who Feels It Knows It, The Oppressed Song are some of Bunny's best songs.
