Witness
The Wallflowers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm standing outside your window, baby
And there you are
Another year, another candle's burning
For the party girl
No one even knows that you're there
Happy Birthday, no one cares

You come around here,
You'd better bring a witness
Everyone in here's on the guest list
And when you're gone you won't be missed
Keep one eye open
When you kiss

Your wishes won't be coming true this year
Now darling don't you cry
We're going to teach you everything
You'll learn to get by
Now lesson number one in homicide
Is emotional murder is no crime

You come around here,
You'd better bring a witness
Everyone in here's on the guest list
And when you're gone you won't be missed
Keep one eye open
When you kiss

Now sticks and stones, baby, break your bones
But the names, in here, can kill
We'd let you leave
But no one else wants you
Your ransom was not made
Now you ain't got to stand up tall
But now baby, you must stand up

You come around here,
You'd better bring a witness
Everyone in here's on the guest list

Now we've never been so impressed
Keep one eye open when, whenever you kiss

Overall Meaning

The music and lyrics of "Witness" by The Wallflowers conjure a complex and frightening world where judgmental and cruel people rule. In the first verse, the singer stands outside the window of a "party girl" who is celebrating her birthday. It seems that no one cares for her and no one even knows she exists. In the second verse, the song takes a dark turn as the singer becomes the voice of the merciless mob. They will not let the birthday girl leave without a witness, as they consider her an unwelcome outsider. They warn her to keep one eye open when she kisses, knowing that they will be watching her every move. The bridge of the song enforces the same message - they may not physically harm her, but their words and actions are lethal and destructive.

The singer is ambiguous - he is an observer, a participant, and a voice of authority, all at once. He could very well be one of the mob, looking down on the birthday girl, or he could be a neutral bystander with a conscience, warning the girl of the danger that lies ahead. Either way, he paints a portrait of a cruel society, where outsiders have no place and are subject to a ruthless judgment. The chorus is haunting, with its eerie repetition of "you'd better bring a witness" and "keep one eye open when, whenever you kiss". The fear is palpable, and the sense of danger is overwhelming.
