The band's blend of punk-inflected folk rock with literate, witty, introspective lyrics have made them one of the most popular bands on the Canadian music scene.
Hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, The Weakerthans have produced four full albums with a variety of unusual subjects; a couple of songs are sung from the point of view of John's cat Virtute (Ver-tu-tay). The Weakerthans are popular in their home city of Winnipeg; their song "One Great City!" expresses their love/hate relationship with the problems and attitude of Winnipeg. No matter their methods, though, one thing is clear: The Weakerthans are not afraid to venture into lyrical styles uncharted by their contemporaries. On their third album, Reconstruction Site, Samson penned three songs, "(Manifest)", "(Hospital Vespers)", and "(Past Due)", in Shakespearean sonnet form.
One origin story for the band's name, as quoted in the liner notes of Fallow, is a line from the 1992 film The Lover: "Go ahead, I'm weaker than you can possibly imagine." The band's name may also refer to a Ralph Chaplin quote from "Solidarity Forever": "What force on Earth can be weaker than the feeble strength of one?" The band alludes to this line in the song "Pamphleteer" from the album Left and Leaving.
The band last released an album, Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre, in 2010.
Since 2015, the band has been on hiatus.

And hear them answered with a whispered no
To crack the code of muscles, slacken, tense
Let every second step in boots on snow
Complete your name in accents I can't place
That stumble where the syllables combine
Take depositions from a stranger's face
So tell me nothing matters less or more
Say whatever we think actions are
We'll never know what anything was for
If near is just as far away as far
And I'm permitted one act I can save
I choose to sit here next to you and wave
The Weakerthans' song Manifest seems to be about the struggle to find meaning and significance in life. The singer in the song mentions wanting to "crack the code of muscles, slacken, tense" and "paint every insignificance a sign." They seem to be searching for a deeper understanding of the world around them, one that transcends surface-level appearances and reveals hidden complexities.
The song also grapples with the limits of human knowledge and the impossibility of truly understanding the world around us. The singer acknowledges that "we'll never know what anything was for" and that even our actions are ultimately inscrutable. Despite this, the singer still finds value in the act of simply being present with another person, choosing to spend their one act on "sitting here next to you and wave."
Overall, Manifest is a poignant exploration of the human desire for meaning and the limitations of our own understanding.

I’ve described the drums on this song as “Joy with conviction”. I just love how they pound the hell out of them.

@@davidvaillancourt5111 It is pretty funny how much hip hop took over the charts when it took putting 6 acts together to get a tour anyone would pay money to see.
