Boris The Spider
The Who Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look, he's crawling up my wall
Black and hairy, very small
Now he's up above my head
Hanging by a little thread

Boris the spider
Boris the spider
Now he's dropped on to the floor
Heading for the bedroom door
Maybe he's as scared as me
Where's he gone now, I can't see

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

There he is wrapped in a ball
Doesn't seem to move at all
Perhaps he's dead, I'll just make sure
Pick this book up off the floor

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

He's come to a sticky end
Don't think he will ever mend
Never more will he crawl 'round
He's embedded in the ground

Overall Meaning

The Who's song Boris the Spider is a humorous take on the fear and fascination that people have with spiders. The song tells the story of a man who sees a spider crawling up his wall and becomes increasingly afraid as the spider moves closer to him. The lyrics detail the spider's movements, from crawling up the wall to dropping onto the floor and ultimately meeting its demise.

At the same time, the song is also a playful tribute to bassist John Entwistle's love of creepy-crawly things. Entwistle wrote the song and also provided the lead vocals, which add to the ominous and eerie tone of the song. The lyrics are straightforward and easy to understand, but the repetition of the chorus, "Boris the spider," adds to the song's catchy and memorable quality. The use of a simple melody and steady tempo also make the song easy to sing and dance along to.
