The Man
The Willsons Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What you lead me to
Even though I'm moving on
All your fancy chat
I know you're not all that
All you gave to me has gone
To anyone out today
I will turn your blue to grey
Close your eyes and count to ten
Here comes the weather man again
Chorus.
Rain down, wash away these lies forever
Rain down, drown the chance of us together
Rain down, cover the tears if you can
Rain down
And drown the weather man
So much less to you
Than what I signed up to
You blow hot and cold for me
So change your attitude
Cos I don't need your moods
This is not reality
Close your eyes and count ot ten
Here comes the weather man again
Chorus.
I know I've done whats right
Where you were last night
I'll leave the rain behind
Cos I don't really care
You can stick it where
The sun doesn't shine on me
Chorus.
Yeah, Yeah
Yeah ,Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Rain down
And drown the weather man
(Repeat)
In "The Man" by The Willsons, the lyrics describe a relationship that has soured and the singer's decision to move on from their partner. The lyrics suggest that the person they were involved with was not as significant or valuable as they initially believed. Despite their partner's attempts to charm or impress them ("fancy chat"), the singer sees through the facade and realizes that everything their partner offered them is now gone.
The line "To anyone out today, I will turn your blue to grey" implies that the singer has gained a sense of empowerment and strength after leaving their partner. They are confident in their ability to make others feel less significant or affect their emotions in a negative way.
The chorus "Rain down, wash away these lies forever, Rain down, drown the chance of us together" indicates a desire to cleanse and forget the falsehoods that were present in the relationship. The rain metaphorically represents the cleansing and washing away of the lies and deceit. The singer wants to eliminate any possibility of being with their partner again, as indicated by the line "drown the chance of us together."
The following verses continue to emphasize the singer's realization that their partner is not worth the trouble. They describe how their partner's attitude and mood swings are not something they want or need in their life. The chorus is repeated, reinforcing the singer's desire to let go of the relationship and leave it behind.
The final lines of the song express the singer's indifference towards their partner's actions and whereabouts. They claim to have done what is right and have no interest in where their partner was the previous night. The phrase "stick it where the sun doesn't shine on me" is an idiom to express their disregard and lack of concern.
Overall, "The Man" by The Willsons is a song about recognizing the true nature of a relationship, finding the strength to move on, and leaving behind the lies and deceit. The rain is used metaphorically to represent cleansing and renewal, while the weather man symbolizes the negative aspects of the relationship that the singer wishes to drown out and forget.

So much less to you
You don't mean as much to me as I thought you did
What you lead me to
The promises and expectations you gave me
Even though I'm moving on
Despite the fact that I'm leaving you behind
All your fancy chat
All your charming words and talk
I know you're not all that
I know you're not as great as you pretend to be
All you gave to me has gone
Everything you gave me has disappeared
To anyone out today
To everyone you interact with

Close your eyes and count to ten
Take a moment to calm down and collect yourself
Here comes the weather man again
Here comes your fickleness and mood swings again

Refrain of the song
Rain down, wash away these lies forever
Let the rain wash away the lies and deceit permanently

I was cast as Marian for my musical! I'm so excited! Even though all the odds were against me, I nailed my audition and got the role! Those high notes on My White Knight and Goodnight My Someone will really make my performance. I perform in a few months!
Edit: My best friend also got a lead! She got the part of Amaryllis. I am so excited to do the Goodnight My Someone Scene with her! And she's excited that she gets to call me an old maid in front of hundreds of people.
Second Edit: One month away from opening night. I have gotten my costumes and I am so excited! I love Music Man. The original film is better than the remake, just saying. But this one is also a great film, you just can't replace the original.
Third Edit: Opening night is in 6 days. STRESS!!! But it'll be great! I need more sleep...
Fourth Edit: We closed the show last Saturday and I am so sad about it. I loved the show so much. To any people out there who are pursuing theater or are in a production right now, ENJOY EVERY MINUTE because it's only there so long until it's gone. Music Man will always hold such a special place in my heart, it's the best show I've ever done. The shows went amazing and I can honestly say it was the best thing I've ever done. The happiest 4 months of my life. MM helped me get through the hardest time in my life! But it was also the happiest time in my life. The contrast is interesting. It was the hardest time but it was the happiest I've ever been. I LOVE MUSIC MAN. Music Man FOREVER. <3
Fifth Edit: Wow, it's been over six months since when I auditioned for this amazing show. It's incredible to see how far I've come. I'm still mildly obsessed with Music Man and it will just never get old. My new life slogan is "What Would Marian Do?" (I need to put this on a T Shirt or something...) This show is amazing and I'm so grateful that a full version is here on YouTube for everyone to enjoy.
Sixth Edit: Wow, I keep coming back to this comment and realizing how much I've changed. I have now since played other characters including Elsa and Mayzie LaBird, but Marian will always hold a place in my heart. Much love to all my fellow Music Man-iacs!

I know I’m late but I heard from the Musical just the day when I decided to see Hugh Jackman on Broadway at the beginning of 2020. Now its 2022 and I’m still a proud ticket holder but hadn’t the chance to travel from Germany to New York through all the Covid restrictions and all.
In preparation I watched the original movie with Preston / Jones and was so impressed…What a wonderful story with great actors and cheerful lovely music. I wasn’t familiar with any of that, but I was especially impressed by Robert. He was so charismatic, cheerful, loud, and convincing that it’s impossible for anybody not to find him absolutely credible as a salesman and as an actor of a salesman.
I found it a wonderful classy musical film made in 1962 a period which I love to see movies because I’m a massive Elvis fan. (He’d had been a wonderful Harold Hill, too)
And then I found out about the 2003 adaption off the musical movie. I decided to watch it not caring very much which actors would have been in the cast. While the train scene at the beginning was rolling, I recognized this cigar smoking man who was just seen from nose to chin…This lips which holding this cigar looked quite familiar to me….
And wow how cool was that when I was finally recognizing that Matthew Broderick was giving the MM. It’s so amazing what authenticity he gives to the role of Harold. I was really amazed how different the Harold can be taken and how good both can be in their own way.
The Harold of Matthew was smooth, sweet, and cheeky. It is the perfect version for television because you see his cute doe eyes, pouty lips in every close up and hear his mesmerizing voice. He shows a totally different way of salesmanship, subtle and charming.... less obvious than Preston’s way but soooo convincing to me. His uhhh and ahhs while praising Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn’s raising of her feet are priceless to me.
I love that Matthew gives Harold a bit of his own personality and interpretation. I was surprised of his beautiful soft singing voice because I never saw him as a Broadway actor… This very many tongue twisters he did with perfection and facility as much as he does dance ….I simply loved to see him dancing and singing through the story…especially the dance with Marian during Social Ball rehearsals, the dance in the library and the dance between Marcellus Washburn and him during the cheerful ‘The sadder but wiser girl for me’ song.
Almost unbelievable he was born at the time the original film was made and is only 3 years younger than Robert when he did his movie.
To make a long story short, for me both version are very good material to get prepared for this beautiful stage play I never knew before…
I partly understand why some of you criticise Matthew’s performance because he is absolutely no Robert. But he didn’t have to for me. He gives Harold his touch and I love it. And of course I adore Victor Garber and Molly Shannon together…Hilarious…
Thank you Robert and Matthew for giving me the Music Man. Now I’m ready for Broadway and can’t wait for Hugh Jackman ermm Harold Hill rocking River City.
THANK YOU @Andre Morais for bring this here on youtube.
