There is a lot of talk about this, so let me clarify a few things.

1. There are two songs called "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson recorded his song in 1937. The other song, first recorded by Don (Level) and Bob (Love) on Argo in 1961 shares a couple of lines with the SBW song, but it's a different song.

2. The Don and Bob song exists in two different versions: one has echo on the vocals, the other doesn't.

3. The Yardbirds seemed to have heard the "echo version", hence, "hug-hug", "squeeze-squeeze".

4. The versions of "Five Live Yardbirds" I've heard over the years had the studio version of GMLS. The Repertoire and Fuel 2000 reissues, so I've read, reassemble the concert at the Crawdaddy Club, which includes the live version; this, is the studio version.

For another great version of the Don and Bob song, Rod Stewart's is nice. He's backed by Jimmy Powell and the Five Dimensions.

Too many commercial (corporate) managers got into things. Take the Beatles; they had a fabulous stripped down sound. Then it was decided to add walls of sound, brasses, swelling symphonies in the background and the music went south. I hated the Beatles after they got all fancy and I then started listening to the Yardbirds and the Stones; rough, raw, stripped down, and thoroughly appealing to the primal in us :D. You get these office businessmen who think their hot stuff and know everything and they want to make all music "commercially successful". For my money, they are CLUELESS and don't know when to leave a good thing alone. Even the Stones got very commercial after a while.... blahhhhhh!!! That's why it's good to have the old recording and listen to the REAL stuff!!! :D :D :D

This song was Clapton's first recorded vocal. He sings co-lead with Paul Samwell-Smith. Relf is on the track, playing harp and 3rd harmony on the choruses and backup during the guitar solo.

A couple of corrections:

The Sonny Boy Williamson song is called, "Good Morning School Girl" on the label.

The Rod Stewart version is NOT backed by Powell and the Five Dimensions. He left the band in 1963 and his version came out in 1964.

@DeedleDeedleDumplin That's your opinion ("my son John" : ) I've never liked The Faces' recordings, or much of Stewart's solo stuff after that, but I can't gainsay Rod's voice - I think he's a good singer, even though his voice is not 'my cup of tea', but I do think his 1964 recording of Good Morning Little School Girl is excellent, similarly his vocals with Jeff Beck during 1967--1968. I also think Rod premiered the Robert Plant style-of-singing on vinyl - e.g. "Rock My Plimsoul" 1967.

good point, no one would have the balls to record this song today, at least definitely not in the darker spirit of grateful dead's version. the yardbird's played this song very up tempo and poppy so the lyrics could easily fly past you.
