The girl from Ipanema Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The girl from Ipanema goes walking and
When she passes, each one she passes goes
When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle that
When she passes, each one she passes goes
How can I tell her, "I love you?"
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking and
When she passes, I smile but she doesn't see, doesn't see
Olha que coisa mais linda mais cheia de graça
É ela menina que vem e que passa
Num doce balanço a caminho do mar
Moça do corpo dourado do sol de ipanema
O seu balançado é mais que um poema
É a coisa mais linda que eu já vi passar..
But I watch her so sadly
Porque tudo é tão triste
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, I smile but she doesn't see
Por causa do amor
She just doesn't see
Nem olha para mim
She never seem me
Por causa do amor
The lyrics to "The Girl from Ipanema" by Frank Sinatra tell the story of a young and beautiful girl from the Brazilian town of Ipanema. The song starts by describing her physical appearance, with the words "Tall and tan and young and lovely". As she walks down the street, everyone who sees her is mesmerized by her beauty, and they can't take their eyes off of her. The lyrics also compare her movements to those of a samba dance, as she sways gently and swings so cool.
However, the singer of the song watches the girl so sadly because he is in love with her but cannot express his feelings. He fantasizes about telling her how he feels and giving his heart to her, but every day, she walks to the sea and looks straight ahead without seeing him. Despite his heartache, the singer continues to admire the girl from afar and smile when she passes, even though she never sees him.
The lyrics of "The Girl from Ipanema" paint a vivid picture of a young woman who captivates everyone around her with her beauty and her graceful movements. At the same time, the song explores themes of unrequited love and the pain of watching someone you love from a distance.

Olha que coisa mais linda
Mais cheia de graça
É ela menina, que vem e que passa
Num doce balanço, a caminho do mar
Moça do corpo dourado
Do sol de Ipanema
O seu balançado
É mais que um poema
É a coisa mais linda
Que eu já vi passar
Ah, por que estou tão sozinho?
Ah, por que tudo é tão triste?
Ah, a beleza que existe
A beleza que não é só minha
Que também passa sozinha
Ah, se ela soubesse
Que quando ela passa
O mundo sorrindo
Se enche de graça
E fica mais lindo
Por causa do amor

My 17 year old daughter was just humming this amazingly beautiful tune. I looked at her and asked if she knew the song. She did not. Well, she does now! And we are dancing around our kitchen listening together. What a wonderful bonding moment. Peace and Love be with us all...
