Sweet and Lovely
Thelonious Monk Quartet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sweet and lovely sweeter than the roses in May
Sweet and lovely heaven must have sent her my way
Skies above me never were as blue as her eyes
And she loves me, who would want a sweeter surprise

When she nestles in my arms so tenderly
There's a thrill that words cannot express
In my heart a song of love is taunting me, melody, haunting me
Sweet and lovely sweeter than the roses in May
And she loves me, there is nothing more I can say

Sweet and lovely sweeter than the roses in May
Sweet and lovely heaven must have sent her my way
Skies above me never were as blue as her eyes
And she loves me, who would want a sweeter surprise

When she nestles in my arms so tenderly
There's a thrill that words cannot express
In my heart a song of love is taunting me, melody, haunting me

Sweet and lovely sweeter than the roses in May
And she loves me, there is nothing more I can say

You gotta think it was divine intervention that this recording was rescued after so many years. Monk was such a brilliant architect harmonically that once you heard him, you never heard music the same way again. Like after you seeing a Van Gogh painting, your perception of any landscape changes forever. A great genius helps you realize something you already know, but don't know that you know. God bless Thelonious Monk!

Very beautiful. It took the public a long time to catch up to him, but Monk finally expanded everyone's musical mind after decades of frustration and poverty. Whoever put this up, thank you!!!

SECOND AND LAST SONG REMEMBERING THELONIOUS MONK ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH IN ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA IN 1917.
Sweet and Lovely was recorded on November 29, 1957 at "Thanksgiving Jazz", a benefit concert produced by Kenneth Lee Karpe for the Morningside Community Center in Harlem. Other acts performing included: Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins, and Chet Baker with Zoot Sims. The recording, by Voice of America, documents two sets by the Monk Quartet with Coltrane that night.
The tape was stored at the Library of Congress where it sat untouched, until 2005 when it was discovered by recording lab supervisor Larry Appelbaum. The recording was then restored by producer Michael Cuscuna and T.S. Monk (Thelonious Monk's son.)
The recording has been highly praised: Newsweek called it the "musical equivalent of the discovery of a new Mount Everest," and Amazon.com editorial reviewer Lloyd Sachs called it "the ultimate definition of a classic". Soon after its release, it became the #1 best selling music recording on Amazon.com.
Monk is joined by John Coltrane tenor sax, Ahmed Abdul-Malik bass and Shadow Wilson drums. When this concert album finally saw the light of day in 2005, it was the musical event of the year. Jazz aficionados were in ecstasy upon hearing it. It is a TREMENDOUS concert. I've said before that I've never heard Monk in such an ebullient mood. He was obviously having a ball that night and Trane is responding in kind.
Repeating, WKCR here in NYC is playing 24 hours of Monk today and you can stream it on your computer.

I got this CD about a year and half ago, and I still listen to it 2 or 3 times a week! Coltrane and Monk, you live on!

I love the trio version of this by Monk and what he does here with Trane is fantastic.

Wow....just fabulous.  Always amazes me what some people will "dislike" on You Tube!  Seriously?  Just move on....some people!  Wonderful version of a great song.
