With keen pop sensibilities, a skewed sense of humour and a willingness to draw inspiration from diverse sources (notably punk rock), Therapy? came to attention in the early 1990s rise of alternative rock, but have endured for more than a decade since; Critic Johnny Loftus writes, "After a ten-plus year career that has seen them outlast competitors and outwit industry attempts at categorization, Therapy? are still headbangers with their thinking caps screwed on tight."

We, we used to be friends
We used to give a shit about each other
That was then
This is today
You took all of my trust
You took my drugs
It wasn't enough
Back in the day we thought we suffered
We didn't know each other well enough to guess how this would end
Both confused and both unknowing where we're both going
Now you're back
I thought you were dead
Dead, dead, dead
Friends, who fuckin' needs 'em?
They only let you down
They take your time
They bleed you dry
Back in the day we thought we suffered
We didn't know each other well enough to guess how this would end
Both confused and both unknowing where we're both going
Now you're back
I thought you were dead
Dead, dead, dead
You, you sold me out
You sold me out
You sold me out
Back in the day we thought we suffered
We didn't know each other well enough to guess how this would end
Both confused and both unknowing where we're both going
Now you're back
I thought you were dead
Dead, dead, dead
Dead, dead, dead, dead
The lyrics of Therapy?'s song Dead in 2-3 talk about a broken friendship. The singer is lamenting about how they used to be friends with someone and had a genuine concern for each other but now everything has changed. The other person had taken their love, their trust, and even their drugs, but it had not been enough. The chorus repeats the word 'dead' multiple times suggesting that the friendship is over and there is no coming back from it.
The second verse begins with an almost nihilistic statement - 'who fuckin' needs 'em?' - where the singer questions the importance of friendships in their life. They have been let down by people they once considered friends and are now jaded about investing emotions and time into them. The bridge talks about the ignorance of the past where both people in the friendship thought they were suffering but did not know enough about each other to predict how things would end up. However, now the other person is back, alive and well, but the singer had presumed they were dead.
The song in total captures the angst and frustration of a broken friendship with honest lyrics and grungy instrumentation.
