Overstand
Thievery Corporation Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me make it clear
I don't care for religion
But you're still my brother
No matter your decision

The blond haired, blue-eyed
God is overrated
I am not attracted to the
Picture that you're painting

I know I am young
And I have much to learn
But faith without reason
Makes me concerned
Believing in wonder
?

For your home benefits
Your world to be seen
So come on put your
Foolishness under my feet
Be aware of mind games
Of society

So let me make it clear
I don't care for religion, hey
But you're still my brother
No matter your decision

The blond haired, blue-eyed
God is overrated
I am not attracted to the
Picture that you're painting

Listen now
Hear me now

I know I am young
And I have much to learn
But faith without reason
Makes me concerned
Believing in wonder
?

For your home benefits
Your world to be seen
So come on put your
Foolishness under my feet
Be aware of mind games
Of society

So let me make it clear
I don't care for religion
But you're still my brother
No matter your decision

The blond haired, blue-eyed
God is overrated, yes
I am not attracted to the
Picture that your painting

So let me make it clear
I don't care for religion
But you're still my brother
No matter your decision

Overall Meaning

Thievery Corporation's song "Overstand" carries a powerful message about tolerance, acceptance, and the importance of asking questions. The first verse highlights the idea that one can hold different beliefs from someone else and still be brothers. The singer states that he doesn't care for religion, but he acknowledges that regardless of their differences, they are still siblings. This viewpoint is particularly relevant in a time when religious intolerance and extremism are rampant.

The second verse contains bold lyrics about religion, pointing out the shortcomings of blindly following faith without reason. The blond-haired, blue-eyed God referred to in the song is most likely the European depiction of Jesus, which some believe portrays him as a white man despite historical evidence suggesting otherwise. The singer is not attracted to this depiction and recognizes that questioning is an essential aspect of understanding one's beliefs.

The chorus, where the singer repeats that he doesn't care for religion, is a further affirmation of his earlier statement that regardless of his beliefs, he still considers the person he's addressing as his brother. The last two lines of the song, "The blond-haired, blue-eyed God is overrated, I am not attracted to the picture that your painting" can be interpreted as a call to view the divine differently, perhaps outside of the Europeanized depiction that continues to be persistently promoted as the norm.

Well said. I love this song. It hits nicely. And I agree with the sentiment of the song. Only thing is saying “Your blond haired, blue eyed God is overrated.” I assume they’re talking about Jesus. Everyone knows he was a native Middle Easterner. He wasn’t a Nordic man. Either way, I’m not a Christian nor religious in any way, but I know that it’s the words and ideas and actions that come forth from a man that matter, not his physical characteristics. A man doesn’t have anything to do with his physical characteristics. They’re not even worth mentioning, that’s how meaningless they are. Only his words, his thoughts and ideas, and his actions. His character. That is all. Aloha.
