The Holy War
Thin Lizzy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you will adore me
Bow before me and praise my name
If you place no god before me
Then all I have is yours to claim

And if God is in the heavens
Why did God let children die
If you don't ask these questions
There is no reasons why

[Chorus]
We are chosen
We are one
We are frightened of no one
And no one will win this war
This is the way
This is the law

All the visions shown before you
All the kingdoms and the thrones
All are yours if you bow before me and adore me
All this you can own

There are those that will go to Heaven
There are those that will never win
No one knows what will happen
There are those that turn to sin

[Chorus: x2]

We are chosen

The devil is in hell with the demons
This is the Holy War

They lead us to our temptation
Lead us, take our souls
There is no evil in salvation
There is evil in us all

Just as Satan tempted Jesus
And Jesus slips and falls
He is a station on The Cross now
He is dying to save us all

[Chorus: x2]

We are chosen
We are one
We are frightened of no one

And no one will win this war
This is the way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Thin Lizzy's song "Holy War" reflect on the concept of religious conflict and fanaticism. The song questions the hypocrisy behind religious wars and the human cost that they entail. It talks about the human behavior of worshipping a superior being and placing it at the forefront without questioning why it would allow for atrocities to happen, such as children dying, and the moral ambiguity behind it. The lyrics offer the idea that all power lies within one's own being, and redemption comes from within, and not by an external source. The song also touches on the duality of human nature and the concept of good and evil existing within everyone.

The chorus "We are chosen, we are one, we are frightened of no one, and no one will win this war, this is the way, this is the law," reflects on an army that believes it is fighting God's war and will emerge victorious. The song also borrows Christian imagery of Satan tempting Jesus and Jesus dying on the cross to emphasize the idea of the devil living within every person and the concept of sin. However, the song ends on a note of hope by saying that redemption lies in taking responsibility for one's actions and that it is within our power to save ourselves.

fafa

Yes indeed, check out Blue Oyster cult as well, another underrated rock band that absolutely slaps

Vinay Mulukutla

Are you sure? Phil Lynott has his statue in Dublin so I am not sure if Thin Lizzy were underrated seeing that they are recognised as icons of Irish rock.

DinMamma

@Vinay Mulukutla it’s said about every band to every clip, if you know YouTube clip commentary it’s rather predictable.

amsedelm

Man! I'm brazilian and i'm very sad about my ignorance. Only today I found this band and your great music. For accident I heard in a show on tv the name Thin Lizzy and about Gary Moore has played with them. Gary More I have heard before but never ever heard Thin Lizzy. I understand they was influence for all bands like Van Hallen, Iron Maiden and all the hard rock bands in EUA. Rock! Rock! Pure rock and nothing more!

Anthony Bryan

Never too late to jump on the lizzy fan club
Welcome friend

ofkhorsheed

Phil's father was Brazilian, be proud.
