Ruin
Third Wave Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Feel your ground is moving
I watch you slip again
Inert steps so insecure
Defeat the trust in me
Replacing lies and honesty
Repeat the words I couldn’t speak
For now, you avoid to fucking hear me
Amen to those who will recover me
A pale imprint of how I used to be
Collapsed but a ruin in clarity
Anyway, so that’s how it’s gonna be
The sin is calling again
Makes me feel incomplete
Onward into strange circumstance
The day I will see myself as a friend
Not as a foreign creep
Will be the day I take your coffin down
Six feet deep
Stones must first cave in
To become a ruin
Amen to those who will recover me
A pale imprint of how I used to be
Collapsed but a ruin in clarity
Anyway, so that’s how it’s gonna be
A bitter home I’m leaving easily
Step outside towards insanity
Collapsed and useless to pretend
Anyway, so this is where it ends
Watch me
Cave in
Amen to those who will recover me
A pale imprint of how I used to be
Collapsed but a ruin in clarity
Anyway, so that’s how it’s gonna be
A bitter home I’m leaving easily
Step outside towards insanity
Collapsed and useless to pretend

Anyway, so this is where it ends
Just a ruin in clarity

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Third Wave's song Ruin tell a story of an individual who struggles with trust and their self-perception. The singer sees the world around them as a constantly shifting and unstable place, causing them to feel insecure and unsteady in their steps. They feel defeated by their lack of trust in others and themselves, leading to a sense of disconnection from reality. They describe themselves as a "ruin in clarity," suggesting that they are unable to see themselves clearly and are instead consumed by their own negative emotions.

Throughout the song, the singer reflects on their own shortcomings and regrets, admitting that they have lied and failed to speak up when they should have. They long to be able to see themselves as a friend rather than a "foreign creep," indicating a sense of alienation from others. At the same time, they struggle with feelings of incompleteness and the pull of their own sinful tendencies, leading to a sense of hopelessness and futility.

Overall, the lyrics of Ruin convey a sense of emotional turmoil and a deep yearning for connection and self-acceptance. Everything about this clip is perfect from the location, the layout, the usage of masks by background actors (under the nose, under the chin, unfitted). Not so good for the books, but entirely accurate to life.

People bring up Covid-19 now, but this scene has the iconography of the response to SARS, which had a 3% infection fatality rate, but devastation on this scale has actually happened in the past, to 100s of millions of people, "Firsthand accounts of the Black Death in europe and the Middle East and many subsequent historians have assumed that the pandemic originated in Asia and ravaged China and India before reaching the West." In some places wiping out 70% of the population... "What disease caused the deaths of over 90% of the Native Americans?
They had never experienced smallpox, measles or flu before, and the viruses tore through the continent, killing an estimated 90% of Native Americans." Which is likely the inspiration of the movie, the Indigenous perspective of european colonization of the Americas.

I think that the final point you make here has been discussed by the original novelist Rick Yancy. He mentions Sagan’s infamous quote that aliens will treat us as colonial settlers did the Native Americans, and the other waves demonstrate this notion: the power outages, disrupting existing communications; and the catastrophic flood, the destruction of existing infrastructure, and further a loss of habitat. finally yes, the bird plague representing non-native disease
