Agree. Clinton's version is faster tempo, more alacrity to the delivery too. This one (Tommy Dorsey's) seems to plod. It does plod. Ditto on the vocals. There's a ninniness to the singing in the Clinton band's version that goes perfectly with what i think of as dipsydoodleness. I'm a firm supporter of dipsydoodlism.

@@angelsaltamontes7336 Though known as a composer, Clinton had not yet begun making recordings with his own band when Dorsey made this track. Since they were both on VIctor, the label would not have released two big band versions of the same song, thus Clinton did not even record it commercially back then....only for an Associated Transcription (radio-only) disc after the Dorsey had already become a top seller.

@@angelsaltamontes7336 I've always felt that this song was written to be covered by Will Osborne. I mean, it's written all over--arrangement wise. Constant glissing in the beginning, and instrumentally how the melody follows along his signature motif throghout the entire song, how could it not be?

No, no... Miller's In The Mood comes from Tar Paper Stomp, via a Fletcher Henderson tune whose name escapes me right now, via Edgar Hayes' 1938 In The Mood. It was Hayes' arranger, Joe Garland who took the riff and composed a tune around it. Together with Miller, for whom Garland later worked, he sandpapered it into the tune that has become the deathless version. Interesting alternatives are Teddy Wilson's 1939 recording and Dutch bandleader Ernst van 't Hoff's 1941 version, recorded in, of all places, Berlin.
