In My Room
Thomas W. Ward Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the moments of clarity
Building piles of inadequacy
So high that I cannot see
All the beauty that the clearness brings
Sunlight, it's been days
Sweet dreams, no such thing
Hungering for the cloud that fogs my gaze
Oh, this world is cruel
But I'm laughing in my room
As it slips out from my view
Until I decide that I'm through
Looking ahead and behind, I'm two-faced
Stop me at night, but not the day
Clear sky looms and from the path I stray
It's a turn I know so well along the way
I'm on the edge, I'm on the brink
Seems I've been born just to think
Hungering for the cloud that fogs my gaze
Oh, this world is cruel
But I'm laughing in my room
As it slips out from my view
Until I decide that I'm through
Sometimes I look and I'm surprised
To see you content, I wonder why
How long can you stand by the side
Of a man who does nothing but hide
Playing life like it's a game
Treating your love just the same
Hungering for the cloud that fogs my gaze
Oh, this world is cruel
But I'm laughing in my room

As it slips out from my view
Until I decide that I'm through

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Thomas W. Ward's song In My Room are a meditation on the moments of clarity that come when we are alone with ourselves, free from distraction and the noise of the outside world. The singer describes building piles of inadequacy so high that he cannot see the beauty of the clearness that comes with clarity. He longs for the cloud that fogs his gaze, the familiar darkness that provides a refuge from the harshness of the outside world. Despite the cruelty of the world, the singer finds solace in his room, laughing as the world slips out of his view until he decides that he is through.

The song explores the complexity of human emotions and the ways in which we often hide our true selves from others. The singer acknowledges that he is two-faced, able to hide his pain from those around him. He admits that he was born to think, to turn inward and seek refuge in his own thoughts. Yet, he recognizes that his behavior can be hurtful to those who love him, treating their love like a game.

Overall, the lyrics to In My Room are a poignant reflection on the human experience, exploring the tension between the beauty of clarity and the pain of the outside world. The singer finds peace and solace in his own thoughts, but recognizes the toll his behavior can take on those around him.

Truly a masterpiece and arguably Wright's single most important work. Wright and wife Catherine traveled to Japan in 1905 with Mr and Mrs Ward Willits. But the Willits' severed their friendship with Wright after the scandal of Wright's affair with Mrs Cheney broke. Mr Willits lived in the house until his death in 1950.

Willits must have had the money to invest in a solid structure with good footings, sound materials, etc......OR has it undergone extensive repairs? Either way, it is a magnificent structure.

JuanK Bedoya

the first true prairie house but still one of the best...

Everlasting!
Maybe more appropriate music related to the period of the architecture.

Sadly, recent 2017 Facebook postings describe the home now as endangered due to much deferred maintenance.
