We're the only ones here ever really understood you
Everyone is looking out the corner of their eye
I will stare you down now, Lorelei
Lorelei, I wish I'd never seen your face
Why can't I just turn around and walk away
Lorelei, Lorelei, Lorelei
You surround yourself with mannequins ad dolls
And keep them tied up in riddles they can't solve
Their frozen adoration, it's what keeps me on the move
I would turn to stone if I fell in love with you
Lorelei, I wish I'd never seen your face
Why can't I just turn around and walk away
Lorelei, Lorelei, Lorelei
Lorelei, Lorelei, Lorelei
I've seen all those 'Play Misty For Me' moves
Why can't I just turn around and walk away from you
Lorelei, I wish I'd never seen your face
Why can't I just turn around and walk away
Lorelei, I wish I'd never seen your face
Why can't I just turn around and walk away
Lorelei, Lorelei, Lorelei
Lorelei, Lorelei, Lorelei
Lorelei, Lorelei, Lorelei
The Thrashing Doves’ song “Lorelei” has a haunting and dark tone. The singer’s description of Lorelei is a woman who is surrounded by mannequins and dolls, and who keeps them tied up in riddles they can never solve. Everyone else in the room is looking at her out of the corner of their eye, but the singer and his skinny black cat voyeur are the only ones who really understand her. The singer admits that he has fallen for Lorelei, but is afraid to let himself fall completely because he fears he will turn to stone. The song is about obsession and the inability to break free from it.
The lyrics of “Lorelei” are rich with symbolism. Lorelei is a reference to a German legend about a siren who lured sailors to their death. The mannequins and dolls represent people who are not fully real, but who are controlled by Lorelei. The skinny black cat voyeur is a reference to the cat from the fairy tale “Puss in Boots,” as well as the idea of the cat as a voyeur. The idea of turning to stone represents being frozen in place, unable to move forward or break free of the obsession.
