The original lineup included three lead vocalists — Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells — along with Michael Allsup on guitar, Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards Floyd Sneed on drums and Joe Schermie (from the Cory Wells Blues Band) on bass.
Three Dog Night recorded some tracks with Beach Boys producer, composer, vocalist, and instrumentalist Brian Wilson before signing with Dunhill Records and at the time went under the name Redwood. The band changed their name based on an article describing how Australian Aborigines slept with their dogs for warmth on cold nights, the coldest being a "three-dog night."

And you look out across the sea
And you know there's another place perhaps
A young man can be
And you jump down to the rooftop
And you look out across the town
And you know there's a lot of strange things
Circulatin' round
But it ain't easy,
It ain't easy, it ain't easy
To go ahead when your going' down
Well, the people have their problems
But that ain't nothing new
Well the hope and understanding
Can bring you on through
Well it can bring you on through
It can take you to the end
And that, ooh, woman, she can bring you down again
But it ain't easy,
It ain't easy, it ain't easy
To go ahead when your going' down
Satisfaction, satisfaction, tell me who is satisfied
When she, ooh, she take it in
And she hold it deep inside
And she hold it in too deep
And she bite it with her teeth
And that, ooh woman, she can give you some relief
But it ain't easy,
It ain't easy, it ain't easy
To go ahead when your going' down
It ain't easy when you're goin' down
The lyrics to Three Dog Night's "Ain't Easy" speak to the challenges of navigating through life when faced with difficulties and troubles. The song opens with an image of standing at the top of a mountain, looking out across the sea, and imagining the possibility of being somewhere else. However, the reality is that strange things circulate around the town, and it can be challenging to push forward when everything feels like it's going downhill.
The second verse shifts focus to the people around us and acknowledges that everyone has their problems. However, hope and understanding can help us to persevere and get through tough times. The lyrics acknowledge the highs and lows of life, with a woman bringing joy and relief but also having the power to bring someone down again.
Throughout the song, the refrain emphasizes the difficulties of moving forward when it feels like everything is going wrong. "It ain't easy" serves as a reminder that despite the challenges, we must keep pushing forward in life.
Some potential themes in this song include the importance of perseverance, the balance of joy and difficulty in life, and the power of hope and understanding in getting through tough times.
