The original lineup included three lead vocalists — Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells — along with Michael Allsup on guitar, Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards Floyd Sneed on drums and Joe Schermie (from the Cory Wells Blues Band) on bass.
Three Dog Night recorded some tracks with Beach Boys producer, composer, vocalist, and instrumentalist Brian Wilson before signing with Dunhill Records and at the time went under the name Redwood. The band changed their name based on an article describing how Australian Aborigines slept with their dogs for warmth on cold nights, the coldest being a "three-dog night."

I know your angel eyes can see through me
Carry me away
Far from the love you give so generously
So generously
Woman, woman
I got a burning heart
I need to call
I've got a burning heart
I need to tell you that's its you that I love
I've got a burning heart
I need to tell you that I'll never get enough, yeah
Never, never, never, never, never, never, never get enough
Woman
Woman, I know you understand
The way that I feel, feel
Can't you hear me?
I'm a callin' your name
I want to make love to you
Lord, oh Lord, I want to hold you so much
Let me feel all about ya
Woman and I got a woman
Let me make love to you
Woman I love ya
Woman Oh no, no, no, no
Woman Oh, no
Woman (carry me away, carry me away)
Woman, carry me away
The lyrics of Three Dog Night's song "Woman" describe the intense desire and love the singer has for a woman. The first two lines, "Carry me away, I know your angel eyes can see through me," convey the deep connection between the singer and the woman he is addressing. He is asking her to take him away from the overwhelming love she gives him, which he describes as being generously given.
The next couple of lines, "Woman, woman, I got a burning heart, I need to call and tell you that it's you that I love," convey the passion that he has for her. He wants her to know that he loves her and that he cannot get enough of her. He repeats the line "I've got a burning heart, I need to tell you that I'll never get enough" to emphasize his strong desire for her.
He then asks her to understand the way he feels and to hear him as he calls her name. He expresses his want to make love to her and to hold her close. He ends the song repeating "Woman" and asking her to carry him away again.
Overall, the lyrics of the song convey the intensity of the singer's love and desire for the woman he is addressing. It is a passionate and emotional expression.

Free were hard to top, but Three Dog Night did it with this track. Not just the vocal power of the three singers, but the extended bit after mid-song really added to the feel. All that atmosphere. They made it their own. Three Dog Night were known for the vocalists but the backing band were very, very good.

It’s tunes like this that make you shake your head to think that Three Dog Night isn’t in the R & R Hall of Fame but Blondie & Joan Jett are.

Are you KIDDING ME? THEY ARE UNBELIEVABLE. I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A COUPLE OF GUITARS MORE PLUS THE THREE SINGERS AND THIS WOULD BE THE BE ALL AND END ALL OF ROCK AND WE COULD DIE HAPPY! :)

This was a Free original with the great Paul Rodgers on vocals. Despite this Three Dog Night definitely do a better rendition as unlikely as it may be considering the incredible vocal talents of Paul Rodgers. Corey and Chuck were second to no-one and Danny was no slouch either. Arguably the strongest rock vocal trio of all time.

I agree.... Free were hard to top, but these guys did it, especially with the extended ending.

All I can say about this song besides I love it, is that toward the end of the slow jam when Corey Wells screams it just sends chills down my spine. So damn cool man. Lol! He mosdef had the greatest range in their trio.
While You Were Sheeping
I agree, me too. Amazing vocals and song.

Saw Three Dog Night in concert in 1973/Tampa Stadium. Loved all their commercial successes but this sexy, dark little number will always be my favorite.

MASTERPIECE I NEVER HEARD. WHY DID THEY NEVER PLAY THIS ON THE RADIO?
