Moving Mountains
Thrice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I speak in many tongues of many men
Argue with angels and I always win
But I don't know the first thing about love

I prophesize and know all mysteries
All hidden things are opened up to me
But I don't know the first thing about love
Don't know the first thing about love

I have the keys to open any door
Give all my possessions to the poor
But I don't know the first thing about love

And moving mountains ain't a thing to me
Have faith enough to cast them to the sea
But I don't know the first thing about love
I don't know the first thing about love

All other things shall fade away
Love stands alone and still holds sway
All other things shall fade away
Into the ground into the grave

I give my body up into the flames
And never once have I denied your name
But I don't know the first thing about love

I don't know the first thing about love
I don't know the first thing about love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Thrice's song "Moving Mountains" express the singer's abilities and accomplishments, yet simultaneously reveals a deep sense of inadequacy when it comes to love. The singer claims to speak in "many tongues of many men" and argues with angels, all while prophesying and knowing all mysteries. The singer also has the power to open any door and give all possessions to the poor. Furthermore, they can even move mountains and have faith to cast them to the sea. However, despite all these impressive feats, the singer admits that they "don't know the first thing about love." This seems to imply that no matter how powerful or knowledgeable the singer may be, love is something that remains elusive and enigmatic.

The singer acknowledges the absolute importance of love, as they understand that "all other things shall fade away" and that love alone "still holds sway." Even giving one's body up to flames or never denying the name of a higher power is not enough to know love. Thus, the lyrics suggest that love is not something that can be learned or acquired through knowledge or power, but rather something that must be understood through experience.

Overall, the lyrics of "Moving Mountains" convey a sense of humility and vulnerability from the singer, as they acknowledge their limitations in knowledge and experience of love. The song encourages listeners to reflect on the power of love, and how it can often be elusive even to those who seem to have everything else in abundance.

I just DON'T GET where all the views are? Granted it was only uploaded in March '16, but HOW the heck are some people STILL sleeping on Thrice after all theses years? From the first song I ever heard I was a fan, then through all their changes & evolution remained a fan & have been AMAZED at their ability to change from album to album, yet still remain who they are in someway without completely getting lost... To me, these guys are one of the ULTIMATE BANDS & ARTISTS of all time because of the way they've done so & yet still had every album either be completely amazing or still, at the very least, a really SOLID album (I tried to create a 'Greatest Hits/Favorite Thrice Songs' playlist & found myself adding just about their WHOLE DISCOGRAPHY while at most maybe skipping 2-3 tracks from any individual album & some albums, not even skipping a tracks... It's crazy)!

PS - Still to this day, one of my favorite Thrice songs of all time is 'Paper Tigers'. If you want to hear real artistry & musical ability in being able to change up your sound, yet still make great music, listen to Paper Tigers (and ALL of the 'Artist in the Ambulance' album really), then throw on some 'Come All You Weary' OR THIS SONG (OR 'Disarmed', 'The Weight', 'Doublespeak', 'Words in the Water', to name a few more haha), then tell me these guys aren't the DEFINITION of musicians and/or artists!
