Giant
Tides/Giant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was born a prince in gold
Prophecies of greatness scrolled
Darkness rose, and me they stole
Witches, fey, giants trolls
Titans reign down below
This tower high is my home
Oh this castle on a mote
Oh where would I go if not for
These giants, these giants, these giants, these giants
How high can I fly away, oh
How high can I fly away, oh
Seasons change, come and go
Me, I stay all alone
I dream one day we'll stop the war
They'll come for me
Away we'll soar
Oh this castle's all I know
Oh what would I rule if not for
These giants, these giants, these giants, these giants
How high can I fly away
How high can I fly away

How high can I fly away
How high can I fly away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Giant" by Tides/Giant delve into a narrative that follows the life of a protagonist who was born into royalty ("I was born a prince in gold"). The singer's destiny was foretold to be great, but this path was disrupted by the rise of darkness and subsequent abduction by mystical beings such as witches, fey, and giants ("Darkness rose, and me they stole, Witches, fey, giants trolls"). The mention of Titans below and a tower high serving as the singer's home suggests a complex world filled with diverse and powerful entities.

The singer finds themselves residing in a castle set on a mote, a secluded and protected haven ("Oh this castle on a mote"). The repeated emphasis on "These giants" in the lyrics highlights the significant role that these larger-than-life beings play in the singer's life and world. Despite the safety and familiarity of the castle, the singer questions their place and potential beyond the realm of giants ("Oh where would I go if not for these giants"). The yearning for freedom and exploration is expressed through the repeated questioning of "How high can I fly away" in the chorus.

The lyrics depict a sense of isolation and perseverance as the singer describes staying alone while the seasons change cyclically ("Seasons change, come and go, Me, I stay all alone"). However, amidst this solitude, the singer retains hope for a better future free of conflict and war. There is a longing for unity and peace as they dream of a time when the fighting will cease and they can escape with others ("I dream one day we'll stop the war, They'll come for me, Away we'll soar"). This desire for escape and collaborative freedom is tied to a deeper questioning of identity and purpose ("Oh what would I rule if not for these giants").

In the closing lines of the song, the singer contemplates the limits of their current existence within the confines of the castle and the influence of the giants. The repetition of "How high can I fly away" conveys a sense of yearning for transcendence and a search for personal agency beyond the constraints of their current circumstances. The lyrics encapsulate a profound journey of self-discovery, longing for connection, and the eternal quest for autonomy and liberation from external forces.

This is one of the best splits of the 2000’s

@Mike Estep small world...

@David GordonI discovered Tides through them playing shows with Engineer, who were amazing also. Also funny you mentioned Drowningman...my best friend drove up to Vermont and tried out to be their bass player like right before they called it quits. Like 03 or 04 I think.

Right up there with Dillinger Escape Plan / Mike Patton. Oddly enough, a band that started in Plattsburgh, Drowningman, was opening for DEP back in the early 2000s... Too bad TIdes only played smal gigs- if they really tried to get out there, they could've easily opened for similar acts such as Pelican, Isis or even Neurosis! Problem was, they were on the wrong coastline...
