Everything Happens To Me
Till Brönner Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Until I'm almost mad
I must have 'roused the devil's wrath
Cause all my luck is bad
I make a date for golf and you can bet your life it rains
I try to give a party and the guy upstairs complains
I guess I'll go through life
Just catchin' colds and missin' trains
Everything happens to me
I never miss a thing
I've had the measles and the mumps
And every time I play an ace
My partner always trumps
Guess I'm just a fool who never looks before he jumps
Everything happens to me
At first my heart thought you could break this jinx for me
That love would turn the trick to end despair
But know I just can't fool this head that thinks for me
I've mortgaged all my castles in the air
I've telegraphed and phoned
I send an "Airmail Special" too
Your answer was "Goodbye"
And there was even postage due
I fell in love just once
And then it had to be with you
Everything happens to me
The lyrics of Till Brönner's "Everything Happens To Me" capture a sense of helplessness and despair that comes from experiencing a constant stream of bad luck. The opening line, "Black cats creep across my path," alludes to the superstition that black cats are a symbol of bad luck. The singer goes on to lament all the unfortunate events that seem to plague his life: canceled plans, unwanted noise complaints, missed opportunities. The refrain, "Everything happens to me," sums up the singer's frustration with his seemingly impossible situation.
The second verse shifts the focus to the singer's romantic life. He had hoped that love would be the solution to his woes, but even that proved to be yet another source of disappointment. He has tried everything to win the affections of his love interest, from telegraphing and phoning to sending an "Airmail Special," but all he received in return was a goodbye, and even a postage due. In the end, he recognizes that his lack of luck and bad fortune is just a pattern he cannot escape.
The melancholy and defeated tone in "Everything Happens To Me" resonates with anyone who has felt like life is conspiring against them, no matter what they do. The song was originally written by the legendary jazz pianist and composer, Matt Dennis, with lyrics by Tom Adair in the 1940s. Since then, it has been covered by many jazz, pop, and blues artists, including Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald.
