Beside You
Tim Finn/Bic Runga/Dave Dobbyn Lyrics

Here's to your garden here's to your kids
I heard you were in the neighbourhood
I've been a long time on the skids
And baby I'm beside you - you run from the river

When it long ran over you
This is for you standing up to a bone-chilling wind
This is for the failures you collected from my sin
And this is for your lonesome tears I never dried

This is for you hanging in in the hope that it never dies
And baby I'm beside you - you run from the river
When it long ran over you
This is for you waiting up though the call never came

For the milk of human kindnesses you collected from our dream
And this is for your lonesome tears I never dried
This is for you hanging in in the hope that it never died
And baby I'm beside you - you run from the river

When it long ran over you
And now I'm running here beside you
And now I'm running here beside you
This is for the traveler on a blinding desert road

Good fortune smile upon you and may love be your only load
And this is for the only one who could quell my burning rage
To anyone whose been a broken man and anyone seen better days
Baby I'm beside you

And now I'm running here beside you
And now I'm running here beside you

Overall Meaning

The song "Beside You" by Tim Finn/Bic Runga/Dave Dobbyn is a touching tribute to someone who has been through tough times and has overcome them. The opening lines, "Here's to your garden, here's to your kids, I heard you were in the neighbourhood, I've been a long time on the skids" suggests that the person being addressed has a stable family life and a home, something that the singer may have lacked. As the song progresses, the singer acknowledges the tough times the person has been through and how they have managed to overcome them. The line "This is for you hanging in in the hope that it never dies" suggests that the person has been through a lot of struggles but has managed to stay hopeful that things will get better.

The chorus "And baby I'm beside you - you run from the river, when it long ran over you" is a metaphor for when the person has been overwhelmed by their problems, the singer has been there to support them and help them get through it. The line "And now I'm running here beside you" suggests that the singer wants to continue to support and be there for the person, even as they move forward.

Overall, the song is a touching tribute to someone who has been through a lot but has managed to stay hopeful and push through their tough times. The singer acknowledges the struggles the person has been through, and expresses their gratitude for the person's resilience and strength.

Dave has just sung this waiata this morning at the opening ceremony for the new Paparoa Track. If you listen to the lyrics, it seems a really apposite choice to sing to the Pike River whanau who would have been present at the ceremony.

'Heard you were in the neighborhood/I've been a long time on the skids'.
I love the whole song, possibly that line most of all, though.
