Something Like That
Tim McGraw Lyrics

It was Labor Day weekend I was seventeen
I bought a Coke and some gasoline
And I drove out to the County Fair
When I saw her for the first time
She was standing there in the ticket line
And it all started right then and there
Oh a sailor's sky made a perfect sunset
And that's a day I'll never forget

I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt
She was killing me in that mini-skirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks
She had a sun tan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget something like that

Well it was five years later on a south-bound plane
I was headed down to New Orleans
To meet some friends of mine for the Mardi Gras
When I heard a voice from the past
Coming from a few rows back
and when I looked I couldn't believe just what I saw

She said, "I bet you don't remember me"
And I said, "Only every other memory"

I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt
You were killing me in that mini-skirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks

You had a sun tan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget something like that

Like an old photograph
Time can make a feeling fade
But the memory of the first love
Never fades away

I had a barbecue stain on my white t-shirt
She was killing me in that mini-skirt
Skippin' rocks on the river by the railroad tracks

She had a sun tan line and red lipstick
I worked so hard for that first kiss
And a heart don't forget, no a heart don't forget

I said a heart don't forget something like that
Oh, not something like that

Overall Meaning

The song "Something Like That" by Tim McGraw talks about a memory that has stuck with him all his life. He begins the song by narrating an experience from when he was 17 years old. It was Labor Day weekend, and he ventured out to the County Fair, where he saw a girl in the ticket line for the first time. The moment was perfect; the sky was a deep shade of red, and it became a lasting memory. He remembers the details of the girl's appearance, her tanned skin, and her red lipstick. He worked so hard for that first kiss, and nothing will make him forget that experience. Over time, he hasn't forgotten anything, it feels fresh like an old photograph.

The second verse occurs five years later while the singer was on a plane bound for New Orleans to meet some friends of his for the Mardi Gras. He hears a voice from the back of the plane and sees an unexpected familiar face he hasn't seen for five years. She introduces herself, and they exchange pleasantries. The memory of the first love never fades away, and it's evident as the singer remembers every other word of the girl who had become the defining memory of his youth. The barbecue stain on his white t-shirt was still visible in his mind. This song's message is that love is unforgettable when it's genuine, and the memory of the first love never fades.
